    TITLE OF VACANCY: Substitute Itinerant Aide II, III, IV/Transportation
    POSITION TYPE: Service
    ADMINISTRATIVE UNIT: The West Virginia Schools for the Deaf and the Blind (WVSDB)
    LOCATION: Romney, West Virginia
    On an on call, as needed basis, the substitute aide assists the teacher(s) in a variety of ways to implement the instructional program including working directly with children in small groups or on a one-to-one basis; to establish effective rapport with students assigned to the classroom; to motivate students to develop attitudes and knowledge needed to provide a good educational foundation, in accordance with each pupil's ability. The substitute aide assigned to a school bus route provides supervision of student passengers while traveling, which includes but is not limited to, performing personal care services and securing students in various types of safety restraints, as needed.
    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
    • Assists teacher as needed with planning, preparation, and distribution of classroom materials.
    • Maintains an environment that is safe for students and conducive to learning.
    • Assists with supervision and instruction of children. May be required to assist with copying, cutting, coloring, etc., to construct materials and bulletin boards.
    • Provides individualized and small-group instruction to reinforce skills that have been taught by the teacher.
    • Assists in implementing lessons based on district and school objectives and needs and abilities of students.
    • Conducts learning games with students according to established procedures.
    • Maintains regular attendance and complies with State Law and County policies and regulations.
    • Anticipates and effectively addresses unforeseen crises associated with working with large groups of children.
    • Supervises students while traveling on buses and maintains a safe and healthy traveling environment, as assigned.
      • Must secure students in all safety equipment required for travel.
      • Performs personal care services while in route.
    • Assists the teacher in supervision of children in the classroom and to various locations in the school including, but not limited to, instructional areas, the cafeteria, and the bus.
    • Participates in bus duty, hall monitoring, lunchroom duty, playground duty.
    • Maintains positive work habits.
    • Performs duties efficiently and productively.
    • Attends in-services and workshops directed to maintain and/or upgrade skills.
    • Promotes and maintains positive pupil/staff community relations.
    • Adheres to WVSDB Employee Code of Conduct.
    • Maintains confidentiality, unquestionable integrity.
    • Performs other related duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor(s).
    QUALIFICATIONS:
    Aide II– A person who holds a high school diploma or has received a general educational development certificate and has completed a training program approved by the State Board of Education.
    Aide III–A person who holds a high school diploma or a general educational development certificate and has completed six semester hours of college credit at a higher educational institution OR is employed as an aide in a special education program and has one year’s experience as an aide in special education.
    Aide IV–A person who holds a high school diploma or a general educational development certificate and has completed 18 hours of State Board approved college credits at a regionally accredited institution of higher education. The successful completion of an in-service training determined by the State Board to be the equivalent of three hours of college credits may be counted as part of the required 18 hours.
    • High School diploma or equivalent, pursuant to WV Code §18A-2-5.
    • Meet the definition of “Qualifications" in WV Code §18A-4-8b. demonstrated competency, pursuant to WV Code §18A-4-8e (state-approved competency test), as required. and
    • Must successfully pass criminal background check conducted pursuant to WV Code §18-5-15c and/or §18A-3-10, as appropriate.
    PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
    To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to reach, stand, walk, lift, grasp, write, talk, hear, see, use technology such as computer and multimedia equipment, and use repetitive motions. The employee may frequently lift and/or move at least 50-100 pounds. He/she shall remain free of any alcohol or non-prescribed drugs while in the workplace. Alcohol and controlled substances which affect employee productivity, safety, or judgement will not be tolerated.

    • The staff member must meet ASL and/or Braille skill level requirements as delineated in the WVSDB Communication Policy for job classification.
    • The staff member must complete all required annual trainings and participate in staff meetings as scheduled.
    • The staff member must dress appropriately and adhere to safety standards for the position.

    • The staff member demonstrates self-control and exhibits an attitude of mutual respect and tolerance.
    • The staff member demonstrates ethical conduct and good work habits such as punctuality and attendance.
    • The staff member demonstrates self-direction and the ability to use software applications for work productivity and collaboration.
    • The staff member is self-motivated and demonstrates the ability to manage multiple tasks/assignments to accomplish high-quality work to meet demanding deadlines.
    • The staff member demonstrates excellent communication skills and excellent presentation skills using current technologies.
    • The staff member understands that work assignments may change or be added as priorities emerge.
    SALARY:
    Hourly rate of pay based on WVSDB Service Personnel Salary Schedule (B, C, or D Scale) dependent upon experience and education level. Specific assignment is based upon student needs, enrollment, and departmental needs. Additional compensation is available for ASL or Braille proficiency as detailed in the WVSDB Communication Policy.
    EVALUATION:
    Performance evaluation in accordance with West Virginia Board of Education Policy 5314.
