JOB TITLE: Head Band Director 

REPORTS TO: Principal

WAGE/HOUR STATUS: Exempt

PAY GRADE: Teacher Salary Scale

PRIMARY PURPOSE:

The Middle School Head Band Director is responsible for implementing the District instructional programs and educational philosophy in instrumental music, grades six through eight, as well as for the administrative aspects of the band program.

All employees of SISD are expected to act with integrity, support organizational goals, communicate in a clear and respectful manner, championing the needs of our students and drive continuous improvement.

QUALIFICATIONS:Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
  • Valid Texas teaching certificate – Trades & Industrial Education/Technology Education

Preferred:

  • Three years teaching and band directing experience

SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:

  • Knowledge of overall operation of instrumental music program
  • Ability to manage budget and personnel
  • Knowledge of state and UIL policies governing band and extracurricular activities
  • Ability to interpret policy, procedures, and data
  • Strong communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills

MAJOR REPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  • Coordinates with the Director of Performing and Visual Arts to meet District curriculum goals and objectives as well as to schedule band activities.
  • Organizes the instruction of instrumental music classes.
    • Plans for accurate assessment of student needs in the area of music instruction.
    • Plans instruction and activities to meet the needs of students
    • Plans a developmental course that allows students to build their musical abilities as they progress through classes each year.
    • Encourages an appreciation of music, respect for public performances and a spirit of fair play and teamwork in competition.
    • Assists students in recognizing musical aptitude and in developing that aptitude.
    • Communicates with parents and students to related individual aptitude to band placement and instrument selection.
  • Organizes the band program for the building.
    • Cooperates with Director of Performing and Visual Arts to recruit, interview and employ private lesson teachers.
    • Schedules private lesson programs in cooperation with District personnel.
    • Schedules rehearsals, extra-curricular performances, competitions and festivals.
    • Coordinates activities with building calendar and the Director of Performing and Visual Arts.
    • Plans performances for school activities, pep rallies, concerts and competitions.
  • Oversees the administrative operation of the band program.
    • Assumes responsibility for budgeting, requisitioning and accounting for any receipts of funds.
    • Maintains accurate records of all funds received and disbursed.
    • Maintains accurate inventory of instruments, equipment and uniforms.
    • Oversees the maintenance and distribution of school-owned instruments.
    • Oversees the upkeep and distribution of uniforms.
    • Selects appropriate music and maintains the band library.
    • Works with Band Booster Club to offer opportunities for involvement and to guide their projects.
    • Organizes a communication system to inform parents in advance of all band activities.
    • Communicates with fifth grade students and parents to properly place students interested in the band program.
    • Assists parents and students in selection of instruments.
    • Works with high school directors to encourage and ensure a smooth transition from 8th and 9th grade.
  • Oversees the competitive aspects of the band program.
    • Prepares students for participation in University Interscholastic League competition and other festivals.
    • Completes necessary entry forms and verifies student eligibility.
    • Arranges for transportation and additional chaperones for trips and performances.
    • Chaperones students during all competitions and performances.
    • Coordinates reports of competitions with the principal for awards programs and publication through District communications.
  • Exemplifies citizenship, sportsmanship and professionalism in behavior and performance of duties.
    • Promotes community understanding of the music programs through communication with parents and concern for students.
    • Encourages interest in music and the band program by presenting activities of interest to students and parents.
    • Remains current in the area of instrumental music education through professional organizations, literature, workshops and in-service programs.
    • Participates in meetings and activities that benefit the general welfare of the school.
  • Complies with the position description for the classroom teacher.
  • Performs other appropriate duties as assigned by the principal and the Director of Performing and Visual Arts.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands: physical mobility, standing, prolonged sitting, some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling. . Frequent district and occasional statewide travel; prolonged and irregular hours; outdoor and indoor work; exposure to sun, heat, cold, and inclement weather. Mental demands: Ability to solve problems and deal with a variety of situations; ability to interpret a variety of data; ability to interpret TEC and policy; ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory, ability to be effective in both oral and written communication; ability to maintain emotional control under stress.
