Theater Arts teacher and Director for Middle and Upper School theatrical productions position requires teaching Middle and Upper School Theater Arts and Technical Theater classes (4 sections per term, one preparation period for classes, and one preparation period for production work); and directing and producing three productions per year (one Upper School play in the fall, a Middle School play in the Winter, and a Middle and Upper School musical in the Spring). This position is the primary designee in supporting all theater-related activities at Westmark School.General Westmark Faculty Responsibilities
  • Teach Theater arts classes to students with language-based learning differences;
  • Have a high-level of understanding of special education terminology and research-based instruction.
  • Submit weekly lesson plans;
  • Integrate technology into the curriculum;
  • Maintain the digital class LMS pages;
  • Regularly update the grade book;
  • Provide quick grading turn-arounds for all students;
  • Use behavior management systems that are effective with students with language-based learning differences;
  • Provide a positive environment that encourages students to actively participate in their own learning;
  • Communicate on a regular basis with division directors, department chair, and advisors to discuss student progress;
  • Model professional and ethical standards when interacting with students, parents, peers, and the community;
  • Cultivate positive family partnerships.
  • Participate fully in the life of the school which includes collaborating effectively and collegially with a teaching team, grade-level, and department;
  • Engage regularly in formal, ongoing professional development beyond school-based in-service;
  • Support colleagues and the school by substituting for absent teachers (when needed);
  • Participate in meetings, committees, and community gatherings;
  • Know, understand, and uphold the mission, philosophy and values of the school. All teachers contribute to the school mission and community with activities such as supporting student social-emotional learning, interest groups (clubs), social events, and grade level trips.
THEATER ARTS INSTRUCTION
  • Teach four sections total of Theater arts (including technical theater) to upper and middle school students;
  • Oversee the development of the Theater program for Westmark;
  • Plan and implement fine arts curriculum;
  • Coordinate curricula with other department and grade level teachers;
  • Be a consummate professional that strives to bring the highest quality Theater direction and instruction to Westmark families.
  • Participation in and attendance at all arts-based events, including the Arts Showcase.
  • Additional responsibilities as assigned.
AFTER SCHOOL THEATRICAL PRODUCTIONS
  • Direct three productions during the school year for Middle and Upper School;
    • Produce and direct all shows; Upper School Fall Play, Middle School Winter Production, and Upper and Middle School Musical (which may include evenings and weekends)
      • Overseeing all aspects of the artistic production of the organisation, such as assessing and selecting the performances that will be shown
      • Recruiting performers
      • Coordinating with Upper School Director setting show dates
      • Setting production schedules
      • Managing budget
      • Hosting weekly production meetings
      • Facilitate rehearsal communication to Production team by emailing rehearsal reports.
      • Obtaining production rights to plays and musicals. Upon completion of the production return scripts and librettos
      • Selecting, editing, casting, and directing performances
      • Holding rehearsals and evaluating student performances to ensure show quality by opening night
      • Working with non-performing students on other play production tasks, including set construction, scene changes, lighting, sound, and special effects
      • Assisting backstage work and schedules during tech week and performances ex. costume changes, set, light and sound cues.
    • Oversee: Costumes, Sets, Props, Lights, Sound, Music, and Choreography;
    • Oversee any additional personnel that is brought in to help with the productions.
      • Hiring and overseeing of personnel
      • Collecting Invoices and delivering to the Controller
      • Conduct Design Meetings
      • Communicating Tech schedule and coordinating set up and break down of productions
      • Researching and booking off site performance venues.
    • Conduct Parent Meetings to inform of schedule and expectations
      • Communicating with parents surrounding auditions
      • Coordinate with parents to volunteer with snack donations for rehearsals.
      • Send weekly emails to parents to remind them of the up and coming week’s rehearsal schedule and expectations.
      • Email parents concerning any makeup, costume or production requirements.
    • Work with vendors to support our productions with props, set, costumes, seating etc.
      • Research different vendors that support our productions.
      • Coordinate drop off of items at school site.
      • Coordinate pick up of vendor items that may require driving off site to pick up the item.
      • Coordinate pick up or drop off of item after the show is finished.
      • Coordinate with Payroll and Purchasing Coordinator any purchases or receipts for productions.
      • Coordinate drycleaning of all costumes when the production is finished.
    • Coordinate with school facilities and Advancement Associate tech and production schedule
      • Communicate with facilities any guests that will be arriving to campus to support the theater productions.
      • Coordinate with Executive Assistant to the Head of School concerning scheduled use of the theater space
      • Communicate with Director of Athletics, Physical Education, and Wellness concerning tech and production schedule
      • Communicate with the Director of Finance and Operations concerning tech and production schedule and overall production budget.
    • Coordinate with Director of Strategic Marketing and Communications to oversee the marketing and advertising activities of the Theater including annual marketing plan
      • Working with Strategic Marketing and Communications on developing new audiences while also deepening relationships and communication with current audience.
      • Collaborate with Marketing Department on ticket sales for each production.
      • Request T-shirt and Program Designs between the students to be displayed on the Production Program and T-shirt.
      • Collaborate with Arts Department Head on Production Program Design and T-shirt Design
      • Display and distribute Theater Posters throughout campus.
      • Distribute T-shirts to faculty, staff and students.
    • Develop and maintain an organized, orderly and clean Theater space.
      • Keep an inventory of all props, costumes, hair, makeup and lighting instruments.
      • Requisitions tools, materials, books, instructional aids and supplies, and maintains required inventory records of all materials and supplies; stores, maintains and requisitions repairs, updates and replenishment of all materials and supplies.
      • Manage and give assignments to our Production Assistant to help support our Theater facility.
