Immediate Opening

Westminster School, one of the leading small independent boarding schools in the country, is a diverse, co-educational high school, a close-knit community of approximately 190 employees and 412 students (75 percent boarding, 25 percent day students) set on a 200-acre campus in Simsbury, Connecticut. A key member of the Marketing and Communications office, the Assistant Director of Communications (ADC) is responsible for a variety of internal and external communications as part of the overall marketing communications strategy of the school. Reporting to the Director of Marketing & Communications, the ADC develops and executes plans and tactics that will integrate with the communications goals and objectives of the school, in support of all areas and departments. The ADC helps ensure that school communications (including messages and images) reflect the mission, core values, history and reputation of the school. The role requires a keen awareness and understanding of the school’s culture and a sensitivity to the perspectives of its key constituencies: faculty, students, alumni, parents and prospective families. This is a 12-month, full-time position. This position offers an excellent opportunity for a professional who wants to help establish and expand an area of strategic importance for the school and join a goal-oriented environment with opportunities to advance as a communications professional.

Key Responsibilities

● Develop story ideas and create print and digital content that is informative, impactful, and celebrates the school’s success stories.

●Write and edit articles and correspondence for print and electronic communications including internal and external community emails.

● Design basic graphics and visuals for electronic newsletters, events, marketing collateral, etc.

●Select and edit photos for various platforms (e.g. social media, website, marketing, Admission materials, magazine and print collateral) in support of the school brand.

● Coordinate regular updates to the school website.

Qualifications

● Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in a related field.

● 3-5 years of experience or demonstrated ability.

● Excellent writing, editing, and communication skills.

● Strong attention to detail, aesthetic awareness, and keen eye for design.

● Team player with strong project management skills and demonstrated ability to work independently.

● Ability to bring fresh ideas to the table, work proactively, and complete projects in a timely manner.

● Compelling storyteller and engaging interviewer, enthusiastic about talking with students, parents, teachers, and alumni.

● Ability to juggle many tasks at once, with overlapping priorities and deadlines.

● Experience working in an independent school or university setting is a plus.

● Public relations, marketing, and communications experience is a plus.

●Excellent computer skills, comfortable working with Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator), Google Workspace, Canva, Blackbaud, and content management systems.

●Occasional lifting of any variety of items weighing up to 40 lbs, bending, and climbing stairs.

● Frequently walking and standing around campus (both inside and outside).

● Flexible schedule to work some evenings and weekends for school events.
