WFAE is seeking a Reporter to cover our Race & Equity beat. This position reports to the Executive Editor.
Position SummaryThis Reporter will be assigned to the Race and Equity team and will cover issues related to Race & Equity in the Carolinas. This reporter will file stories for WFAE’s on-air news programs and digital formats. This reporter will also be responsible for contributing to the weekly EQUALIBRIUM newsletter. We are seeking a journalist who reports on big-picture stories from communities of color, with a special focus on the growing and increasingly diverse immigrant communities in our region. This reporter will file stories that make complex topics and policy understandable for the average person, as well as break news, with a mixture of enterprise and daily reporting for digital and radio. The successful candidate will be trained to serve as a backup host and/or newscaster. This position is hybrid, with work in-office and remote, and covered by WFAE’s contract with SAG-AFTRA. The position is based in Charlotte.
Essential Skills:Has strong working knowledge of and experience in journalistic principles and skills (e.g., ethics, interviewing, building audience connections, storytelling, etc.). Works on advanced tasks with some direct supervision and oversight. Examples of work may include but are not limited to: Writing news stories for web and broadcast; writing and delivering newscasts, responding to breaking news, find and establish relationships with credible sources; accepting and pitching assignments for news and feature stories, basic research and analysis, and participating in events as representative of the WFAE. Reporters are is expected to prepare and deliver host-reporter two ways, live and recorded. This reporter will also contribute to and produce both breaking and longer-form, in-depth reporting for broadcasts, website and other digital platforms, as well as participate when needed on Charlotte Talks, our daily news talk show. Also, may be called upon to cover newsmagazines shifts. Support on-air fundraising campaigns.
Preferred QualificationsLanguage: Proficient in Spanish and English
Education and Experience: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent relevant work experience. 5 years of experience in reporting, public media and/or broadcasting
Salary Range: $55,00 to 77,000 based on skills and experience
