Whatcom County Public Works Engineering is hiring a new Engineering Technician to bolster our team. In this position, you will perform engineering reviews to support the Planning Division in land development reviews, specifically stormwater and traffic reviews, to ensure all developments comply with Whatcom County Code, Whatcom County Development Standards, and the Department of Ecology Stormwater Management Manual. You will perform research, review site plans, construction plans, stormwater reports, traffic studies and conduct inspections of roads and stormwater facilities associated with land development projects. Works directly with Planning Division, private developers and engineers as well as coordinate with other Public Works Engineering sections, and Maintenance & Operations.

Performs specialized tasks related to the field of civil engineering and general tasks associated with public service organizations. Under close supervision, fulfills individual responsibilities and functions effectively in a team environment. Complies with engineering and legal standards and requirements. Answers basic questions from the public pertaining to departmental functions and technical matters and provides technical assistance and information orally or in writing as authorized.
The ideal candidate will have an AS degree in Engineering Technology or a related field, two to six years of on-the-job training in Civil Engineering, Transportation Engineering or Transportation Planning and be able to work both independently and as part of a team. The successful employee will think critically with a mind toward safety of the travelling public, act proactively to anticipate needs of the citizens of Whatcom County to solve issues, and bring a positive influence to the workgroup culture.

Qualifications

Engineering Technician III:
Requires an Associate's degree (or higher) in Engineering Technology, or a related field AND four years of progressively responsible engineering technology experience, INCLUDING two years at an Engineering Technician II level.
Engineering Technician IV:
Requires Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or related field AND five years of related, progressively responsible engineering technology experience INCLUDING three years working at an Engineering Technician III level OR Associate's Degree in Engineering Technology or a related field AND seven years of related progressively responsible engineering technology experience INCLUDING three years working at an Engineering Technician III level.
Years of experience required varies, depending on technician level and educational background.

Must have Background Check and Driving Record that meets County Standards.
Requires valid driver's license at time of hire and throughout employment.
Must be eligible to cross between United States and Canada.
