Job DescriptionWhirlwind Coffee Co., is a coffee roastery and cafe in Oak Park IL,, with the mission of giving all net profits back to charities and communities in need. We are looking to hire a motivated super human with a ton of moxie and love for coffee. This hybrid operational role will be hands-on running our cafe and retail store as well as being cross trained in our roastery operations.
You will be starting at the ground floor with us -- that means you will learn everything about this business. So you must be wired to contribute. Your values, work ethic, and ability to work with others is off the charts. At Whirlwind we believe our actions should do all the talking -- we hope you believe this too.
About Whirlwind CoffeeFounded on a love for coffee and desire to do more, our mission is simple:

The following are some of the responsibilities this role will be involved in over the course of your first year. Additional training will be provided depending on existing experience.
Cafe
  • Running the operations of our cafe/retail space, including maintaining our quality of service in collaboration with our shift leads and owner.
  • Staff Supervision: Hire, train, and manage a team of baristas, including scheduling, assigning duties, and providing ongoing coaching and performance feedback
  • Customer experience: We maintain a very high, personable customer experience, and we’re looking to keep it that way! You’ll be leading these standards, addressing guest concerns or complaints, and implementing strategies to enhance experience.
  • Maintaining all cafe related equipment, inventory, POS systems/processes, and growth planning that aligns with our overall goals.
  • Coffee catering: You’ll help us build and manage all catering orders including sales, delivery, and pickup if relevant.
  • Space Rental: Manage scheduling, sales, and setup for any small to midsize rentals of our outdoor space. Ensure the day goes smoothly while not disrupting our other customers.
Business/Marketing/Giving
  • Marketing and Promotion: Collaborate with ownership to develop and implement local marketing initiatives, promotions, and strategies to attract and retain guests
  • Assist with marketing, web content, and social media posts as needed.
  • Liaise with local non profit groups regarding donations (merch, coffee, etc.), and use of our space.
  • Reporting and Analysis: Analyze sales and operational data, prepare reports, and recommend improvements in sales performance, staffing, and cost management
  • Financial Management: Monitor and manage financial aspects, such as controlling costs, maximizing profitability, managing inventory, daily invoice entry, and tracking sales performance
  • Forecast sales and scheduling to meet demand, maintaining costs within budget
Minimum Requirements to be eligible for this position:
  • Experience in the hospitality industry preferably in coffee.
  • Supervisor or management experience with 3 staff.
  • Minimum 1 year managing schedules, inventory, tracking sales, and monitoring costs.
Ideal additional requirements:
  • Developing/maintaining staff training guides, processes and procedures
  • Interacting with Customers regarding events and catering, and coordinating the needs for both.
  • Experience with marketing, social media, and promotions for a business.

  • Should exude confidence, positivity, motivation and empathy; someone who brings the best out in people naturally and the room is better because they are in it.
  • Great computer skills are a must. Must be willing and enthusiastic to learn/operate a large spectrum of equipment, machinery, and tools related to coffee and/or brewing.
  • An innovative soul that isn’t scared of continually trying or learning new things in the name of progress.
  • MUST have a “No job is too small” attitude and be capable of helping others lift heavy objects from time to time (think coffee beans).
  • Raw leadership and coaching talents looking for further leadership growth and grooming.
Pay will be commensurate with experience. Includes free coffee. :)
