Whitney Museum of American Art is Hiring a Front of House Manager Near New York, NY

From September 2024 through February 2025, the Whitney will present Edges of Ailey, the first large-scale museum exhibition to celebrate the life, dances, influences, and enduring legacy of visionary artist and choreographer Alvin Ailey. Edges of Ailey will feature over 90 events in the Susan and John Hess Family Theater. The Front of House Manager will liaise with multiple teams around the museum and will oversee assisting audiences during their time in the theater during performances, classes and public programs.
This is a temporary position with an anticipated end date around February, 2025.
Responsibilities:
  • Liaise with the Visitor Management team for opening the house and beginning performances
  • Assist audiences entering and exiting the theater for performances, including offering special assistance to people with disabilities
  • Identify and reserve accessible seating
  • Provide ALDs if requested
  • Walk through the house and remove any items that audience members have left behind
  • Coordinate with Senior Performance Producer, Assistance Performance Producer, and Production Manager to address on-site patron concerns, questions, and problems
  • Coordinate with Performance, Production, Security, and VME teams in an emergency
Requirements:
  • Minimum of three years of experience working in a theater, museum, or similar setting
  • Background in house management for live performance
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to interface with artists of all backgrounds
  • Positive, professional, and proactive demeanor
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to coordinate and prioritize multiple projects at once
  • Evening and weekend hours are required
  • Occasionally physically demanding work, such as long periods of standing may be required
  • Must be familiar with the inner workings of a museum and capable of coordinating with multiple departments to ensure a positive experience for artists as well as museum guests
  • Familiarity and finely attuned ability in working with artists and performers
Compensation & Benefits:
  • Hourly rate of $40.00
