Wikimedia Foundation is Hiring a Remote Senior Community Safety Specialist - Arabic Speaking

Senior Community Safety Specialist - Arabic Speaking

The Wikimedia Foundation (WMF) is seeking to hire a Senior Community Safety Specialist to help advance the Wikimedia movement’s vision of every human being able to freely share in the sum of all knowledge; as well as its strategic direction - that by 2030, Wikimedia will become the essential infrastructure of the ecosystem of free knowledge, and anyone who shares our vision will be able to join us. This role will be cross functional with the Trust and Safety Team and Human Rights Team.

This position is designed for professionals who have worked within the human rights ecosystem and also have experience with either disinformation or online Trust and Safety. The successful candidate will be experienced, able to work collaboratively or autonomously, and able to exercise good judgment in determining the most appropriate method in high stakes emergent safety issues facing the Foundation and the communities it supports. This is a senior role, expected to collaborate on complex issues with multiple expert teams and requires regular on-call availability for emergencies.

A community safety specialist will collaborate respectfully with others, encourage collegial engagement, treat private information with discretion, demonstrate empathy in their communications with others, be creative and open to new solutions, be supportive of other Specialists, and be flexible in assignments. The Specialist steps into difficult discussions and situations, including those that may involve graphic imagery such as terrorism content, and explains details and context as needed to promote effective resolution, mutual understanding, and civil communication. This is a sometimes chaotic and challenging environment that offers best opportunities for those who thrive working both independently and with others. Proficiency in Arabic and English will be required for this position.

Selected candidates will report to the Senior Manager of Trust and Safety.

You are responsible for:

  • Evaluating reports of human rights threats that endanger the life and liberty of individual users especially but not solely in the Middle East and North Africa and, in close collaboration with other staff, creating and implementing mitigation plans.
  • Collaborating closely with other staff in partnership with the communities to evaluate, process and appropriately address threats to knowledge integrity on the platform.
  • Collaborating closely with other staff to evaluate user activities online and offline to determine if Terms of Use violations or Universal Code of Conduct violations have occurred and recommend appropriate response for Foundation attorney review.
  • Working with other Trust & Safety staff to evaluate, process and appropriately escalate inappropriate content and threats against the safety of volunteers or the public. This work may include evaluating threats of self-violence or terrorism, or processing inappropriate imagery, including imagery involving minors. This involves supporting the team to ensure 24/7 coverage for emergencies. Must be routinely available to lead 1730 to 1930 Pacific time on-call schedule as well as serving other hours in a rotating weekend and holiday schedule.
  • Staying abreast of regional human rights dynamics, trends, and dangers in the MENA region and beyond, as assigned;
  • Partnering with leadership and other staff across Trust & Safety accountability areas to help identify process and policy improvements;
  • Communicate at the appropriate level of discretion with clarity and empathy to a broad range of stakeholders, from executive and Board staff to individuals under personal threat;
  • Work individually and in teams to advise the Foundation on new and developing human rights, disinformation, and user conduct policies and issues.

Skills and Experience:

  • Familiarity with human rights and online exposure through professional or academic work, with prior professional or academic experience in MENA regions a strong plus;
  • Strong commitment to knowledge integrity issues, including a willingness to work with our community on trust and safety matters and to report illegal material to law enforcement with appropriate follow up as necessary;
  • Fluency in Arabic and English a must, with additional Spanish fluency a strong plus;
  • Fluency communicating complex topics in English and Arabic both clearly and succinctly, in writing and orally, to expert and non-expert audiences alike (see also position-specific language requirements);
  • Strong critical and contextual thinking skills with a bias toward action in ambiguous situations;
  • Intellectual curiosity and flexibility that fosters tackling complex problems in creative ways;
  • The ability to excel in a fast-paced, multitasking environment that demands fast turn-around;
  • The ability to flourish in a highly transparent and collaborative environment and work on a team with diverse demographic and cultural characteristics;
  • Experience related to the Wikimedia Foundation's free knowledge mission, including in areas such as free culture issues, public policy advocacy relating to law and technology a plus;
  • Experience working with online user communities is a plus.
