Job Description
Under direct supervision, performs basic to moderate GIS data and geometric/utility network development activities, including developing and updating GIS databases from hard copy maps, site plans, existing electronic data sets, and GPS (Global Positioning System) and field survey data. Identifies and accounts for differences in map projections and overlay of information from different sources. Supports the development of map layouts, atlas maps, and web maps. May collect field data using laptops or tablets and/or GPS. Performs quality control or quality assurance measures to check data, using specific methods prescribed by others. Conducts basic GIS analysis to support clients and projects. This may include the generation of geospatial statistics, 3D and spatial analysis, and temporal analysis within a standard GIS software environment. Tests applications developed by others, usually using a prescribed testing plan. Supports end users for specific applications. Develops very simple scripts and/or applications or modify applications developed by others, particularly python scrips or web applications. Develops basic geodatabases designs and makes minor changes to intermediate to complex databases/ geodatabases including changes to database tables, fields, etc., with the design decisions being developed by others. Supports the specification, installation, and testing of GIS hardware and software. May support installation of hardware and software at client sites. Performs other duties as required. Contributes to firm's TKM by assisting in the development of white papers and technical design documentation of new or special case designs, studies, etc. Submits technical papers and designs for publishing to technical journals with approval and review.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Geography, Science, Engineering, Planning, Mathematics or Government or related discipline. 1 year of progressively responsible experience applying GIS technology. Domestic and/or international travel may be required. The frequency of travel is contingent on specific duties, responsibilities, and the essential functions of the position, which may vary depending on workload and project demands. Equivalent additional directly related experience will be considered in lieu of a degree.
Skills and Abilities
Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office software suite including Access. Basic knowledge of Esri ArcGIS 10.x, ArcGIS Online, GPS technology, and related geospatial software tools. Basic knowledge of Microsoft Internet Explorer, Chrome, and FireFox.
