TITLE : School Bus Monitor

JOB GOAL : To ensure the safety of all students while riding the bus to and from school

QUALIFICATIONS :

  • Must be 21 years of age
  • Some knowledge and experience working with children
  • Must be physically able to assist the driver with the safety, movement, management and care of the children boarding the school bus, leaving the bus and / or being transported
  • Pass a Regional Office of Education Fingerprint / Background clearance including Federal Bureau of Investigation
  • Pre-placement Medical Exam, including tuberculosis clearance
  • Capable of communication and associating with children in a manner which fosters mutual respect.
  • The ability to serve as a member of a team for the safe transportation of students and staff

SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS :

  • Must have active listening, instructing, speaking and oral expression skills.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with students, parents, staff and administration.
  • Should possess social perceptiveness, problem sensitivity, speech clarity and reasoning skills.
  • The ability to assess the needs of children and others around them.
  • The ability to combine pieces of information to form general rules or conclusions when caring for children.
  • Personal and professional attributes include : honesty, trustworthy, respectful, cultural awareness and sensitivity, be flexible, demonstrate sound work ethics, deal with public in a courteous and respectful manner.
  • Must have knowledge of relevant equipment, policies, procedures and strategies.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES :

  • The bus monitor must position him / herself in a location that enables all children to be supervised, and appropriate behavior maintained during the entire bus trip.
  • Assists the bus driver to maintain cleanliness i.e. sweeping, mopping and wiping seats. Helps inspect the bus for any damage.
  • The monitor should know the bus route and have parent contact information updated and accessible at all times.
  • Assist with the loading and unloading of students, including wheelchair students, and special needs students and equipment.
  • Make sure children are in their assigned seats, sitting properly, get off the bus at the correct stop and are being released to the authorized parent / guardian.
  • Assist the driver with emergency and evacuation procedures to ensure the safety of students.
  • Assist driver with bus and / or student accident / injuries, and be alert to physical / medical needs of students.
  • Be able to prepare and submit Bus Conduct Reports to the Transportation Director.
  • Exhibit a positive image as a representative of the Laraway School District.
  • When working on a bus equipped with a wheelchair lift, ensure that the wheelchair is properly secured.
  • Is responsible for securing students who ride in child restraint seats / harnesses.
  • Maintains a high standard of student conduct at all times.
  • Ensures that a child takes his / her belongings with them when departing the bus.
  • Ensure students are aware of rules and responsibilities as passengers.
  • Shares the responsibility for checking the interior of the bus for children immediately after each route and when the bus is parked.
  • Attend necessary Transportation / Safety meetings, trainings, and in-services as required during the year.
  • Always be courteous and respectful toward the bus driver, parents, students and administration; able to work as a team to ensure the safety of all students at all times.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned by Transportation Director, Principal and / or Assistant Principal.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS :

The job's functions require the following physical demands : occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and / or pulling; some climbing and balancing, stopping, kneeling, crouching, and / or crawling when needed.

Generally, the job requires more standing and walking than sitting. Must be able to demonstrate and perform the emergency, evacuation procedures as described and defined by the Illinois School Bus Driver Training Curriculum and endorsed by the Illinois Secretary of State, Illinois Department of Transportation and the Illinois State Board of Education.

These procedures involve, but are not limited to, sitting on floor of the school bus at the rear door and scooting out the rear door to the ground.

The job is performed in a motorized vehicle in all types of weather and traffic conditions.
