Williamsport Area School District is Hiring a FT Head Custodian, Class IV, 1st Shift Near Williamsport, PA

The Williamsport Area School District is accepting applications for a Full Time Head Custodian, Class IV position, 1st Shift. The location is Jackson Primary School; subject to the determination of the Superintendent. Work schedule is 8 hours per day, 5 days per week, 250 days per year. Qualifications for this position shall be based upon applicable verified work experience and verified educational/training/credentials. A written assessment with a passing score of 70% or higher is also required for this position. Qualifications for this position are defined solely by the District, including an employee’s work attendance, disciplinary history, credentials and other job specific qualifications. Wages are as per the collective bargaining unit agreement currently. Minimum job requirements as per the job description below include, but are not limited to, a high school diploma or G.E.D. equivalency. EOE.

Basic Functions:

This position supervises and performs functions, routines, and duties necessary to provide a safe, clean, and inviting physical environment that supports the educational/ learning process for students and staff in all District buildings.

Education & Experience:

High school diploma or equivalent required. Knowledge of basic work area operations and procedures required.

Previous supervisory experience in custodial and maintenance operations preferred.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

This position requires the ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions, and a proficiency in computer related programs such as Microsoft Word processing and other maintenance related programs. The ability to receive a passing score on a written assessment is also required. This position requires the ability to become familiar with monitoring (reading) valves and switches on equipment related to electricity, water, gas, sewage treatment, swimming pools, etc. This position requires the ability to monitor and schedule building automatic temperature control, and programmable lighting systems for day use, after hours event scheduling, and unoccupied periods. This position requires an ability to assist general maintenance professionals.

This position requires the ability to work independently and be self-motivated.

This position requires the ability to assign and monitor the work of others and to provide feedback to staff.

This position requires the ability to communicate with employees at all levels of the organization, and maintain a positive attitude with all employees, parents, students, and other individuals utilizing District buildings. This position requires the ability to display positive personal traits such as integrity, citizenship, respect for others, honesty and responsibility.

This position requires a valid Pennsylvania driver’s license.

Authority & Responsibilities:

  • Performs all cleaning duties as assigned. (E)
    • Prepares building for daily operations;
    • Cleans and disinfects classrooms, small group areas, office areas, etc.;
    • Cleans and disinfects cafeterias, restrooms, and locker rooms;
    • Restocks bathroom supplies daily (toilet paper, paper towels, soap dispensers, etc.);
    • Cleans hallways;
    • Cleans ceiling louvers and univent intakes and outtakes;
    • Cleans and sanitizes water fountains
    • Removes graffiti as needed;
    • Removes trash;
    • Appropriately cleans up spills, vomit, and body fluids as needed;
    • Maintains carpeted areas including vacuuming, shampooing, and extracting;
    • Cleans windows;
    • Strips and seals floors as needed;
    • Maintains cleaning equipment according to guidelines;
    • Monitors building conditions such as freezers, coolers, pool, heating and air conditioning;
    • Performs all other cleaning functions as instructed.
  • Performs wall/door preparation and painting duties as assigned. (E)
  • Ability to perform minor repairs. (E)
  • Ability to recognize concerns, take initiative and work independently. (E)
  • Monitors interior and exterior lighting and makes repairs as needed. (E)
  • Performs grounds keeping duties (mowing, tree trimming, litter clean up, etc.). (E)
  • Operates tools and small equipment related to lawn work, snow removal, cleaning, minor repairs, etc. (E)
  • Drives trucks (non CDL), tractors, and mowers as necessary. (E)
  • Works collaboratively with maintenance to meet the demands of the building (E)
  • Sets up and works from ladders and scaffolding as necessary. (E)
  • Works with staff and administration to plan and set up events. (E)
  • Completes building checks and inspections related to security, cleaning, boilers, chiller plants, playground equipment, roofs etc. (E)
  • May assist with traffic control and parking for events and daily operations. (E)
  • Guards against waste materials, supplies, water and energy. (E)
  • Assists with receiving and delivering supplies. (E)
  • Assists with snow removal. (E)
  • Completes repair requests and submits to the appropriate personnel. (E)
  • Develops and adjusts scheduling within the building to ensure appropriate coverage to complete assigned custodial duties. (E)
  • Responsible for providing onsite instruction for the day and night custodians as determined by the Supervisor and Facilities & Maintenance Operations. (E)
  • Assigns duties to individual custodial staff members to ensure that the safety and cleanliness of buildings are maintained. (E)
  • Supervises the implementation of district approved procedures for custodial operations (E)
  • Responsible for training new custodians and substitutes in assigned areas (E)
  • Provides input to department supervisor and assistant supervisor regarding employee performance. (E)
  • Maintains confidentiality of all business related information. (E)
  • Reports all issues related to custodial operations to the building principal and/or the department supervisor.
  • Performs other related functions as directed by the Assistant Supervisor of Facilities & Maintenance Operations, Supervisor of Facilities & Maintenance Operations and his/her designee.

Physical Requirements:

VERY HEAVY- Exert in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Position requires the following physical movements: continuous walking and standing as well as climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, and handling objects as necessary.

Auditory and Visual Requirements:

Within normal ranges with or without correction.

Equipment Used:

Position requires the use of cleaning equipment, hand tools, power machinery/tools, and vehicles.

Exposures/Hazards:

Position requires exposure to weather, contact with water and/or other liquids, exposure to chemicals used for cleaning and other custodial duties.
