Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School District is Hiring an English Language Arts Coach Near Salem, NC

Functional Purpose

The School-Based English/Language Arts (ELA) Coach is responsible for providing daily ELA coaching services that ensure a cohesive, sustained, intensive and classroom-focused approach that drives student achievement. ELA coaching practices will include strategies that are evidence-based, rigorous, engaging, and relevant for students. ELA coaches will provide a non-threatening, open, professional, and collaborative work relationship with classroom teachers, principal, school leadership teams and district-level personnel. 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide daily coaching support (at least 80% of the school week) to ELA teachers that builds their capacity to deliver differentiated high quality ELA Instruction, implement curriculum, administer assessments, analyze data, and provide intervention opportunities for students.
  • Work directly with ELAteachers in the school by providing classroom-based demonstrations/co-teaching lessons, collaborative and one-to-one support, and facilitating teacher inquiry. 
  • Establish effective coaching cycles and conferencing techniques teachers, aligned with the district coaching model.
    • Conference with individual teachers to ensure that teachers assigned to them have specific goals and plans for improving practice.
    • Provide clear, practical, timely, and candid written and oral feedback to teachers reviewing their ELA instructional practices.
  • Attend and/or facilitate ELA professional learning team meetings. 
  • Support teachers with the analysis of student achievement data and help teachers plan for and adjust instruction based on the results.
  • Promote teachers’ delivery and understanding of the district curriculum through collaborative long-range and short-range planning.
  • Conduct non-evaluative observations of teaching and learning with follow up to improve instruction.
  • Facilitate school-based, high-quality professional development, working with teachers (in teams or individually) to enhance their knowledge and skills.
  • Assist administrators, district ELA coaches, and teachers in addressing course specific curriculum by developing an effective school-wide ELA plan and providing strategies for monitoring the plan’s implementation.
  • Monitor school based student achievement for ELA and follow up on plans to increase student proficiency and growth.
  • Design and conduct job-embedded ELA professional development to provide teachers with specific knowledge and skills to meet the varied needs of students in meeting ELA goals.
  • Meet regularly with the principal, school-based leadership team, and teachers to review data and make recommendations for adjustments in instructional practices.
  • Participate in ELA professional development provided by the district to build capacity and expertise in ELA coaching and effective instructional practices.
  • Maintain an organized system for documenting coaching services as outlined by the school.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of ELA instruction for high school students
  • Demonstrated knowledge of North Carolina Standard Course of Study for High School English/Language Arts and pedagogy
  • Deep knowledge and experience in research/evidence based instructional practice, data- driven instruction
  • Deep knowledge and experience in effective communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills for building an environment with a common instructional focus, promoting initiatives, and conveying expectations
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate in a professional manner both orally and in writing
  • Demonstrated strength in organization and efficiency in meeting deadlines and multi-tasking appropriately
  • Demonstrated ability to function as a collaborative member of a team
  • Demonstrated interest in literacy and professional learning and reflection
  • Demonstration of leadership skills
  • Excellent listening skills
  • Ability to mentor new teachers
  • Ability to work effectively with culturally and linguistically diverse groups

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Minimum: Bachelor’s Degree in Education (Secondary or 9-12 Math) or another related field
  • Desirable: Master’s Degree or above in Education or another related field 
  • Minimum: Five years of successful high school ELA teaching experience
  • Desirable: Successful high school ELA coaching experience or leadership experience in high school mathematics education

Certification and Licensure Requirements

Current North Carolina teaching license required.
