Overview:
The Research Analyst, Principal is in the Population Health Data section within Public Health Policy, Performance, and Strategy. The Research Analyst, Principal will work as part of a team supporting public health initiatives by using statistical and related software to analyze and report upon population health indicators using data primarily from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS), a cooperative effort between the department and the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
The ideal candidate will have a positive attitude and good communication skills, be task oriented, have excellent initiative, and be able to work well independently and as part of a team. Desired professional experience includes analysis of health or population data, scientific writing, and graphic presentation of results. Specialized training will be provided. This position is full‐time, Monday through Friday, optional telework or hybrid (office and telework).
Essential Functions:
- Identify appropriate areas of research based on needs assessments, strategic objectives, or direction from management.
- Implement methods and procedures to assure quality of data collected including collection methods, sampling techniques, and control mechanisms.
- Use SAS and/or R statistical software to analyze data related to chronic disease, injury, and vaccine preventable disease.
- Interpret trends and results of findings and develop conclusions in coordination with federal and state public health programs.
- Respond to ad hoc data requests and provide responses in an accurate, accessible, and timely manner.
- Compile and disseminate findings using written reports and oral presentations.
Qualifications:
- Experience that demonstrates considerable knowledge of modeling and trend analysis and simulation techniques.
- Experience planning, developing, and implementing complex research and statistical projects and presenting the results.
- Experience using and interpreting output of statistical analysis software.
- Demonstrated experience analyzing large and complex health-related data sets such as public health surveillance data, hospital data, or syndromic surveillance data. Gained through a degree in health, biological, or social sciences and two semesters of related college coursework or one year of work experience.
- Demonstrated experience using statistical software packages including SAS and/or R (preferred), SPSS, Stata, etc. Gained through two semesters of college coursework or one year of work experience.
- Demonstrated experience writing analytical (research) reports or materials and making oral presentations.
