General Summary
JOB OBJECTIVE:
Working under general supervision of Circulation Supervisor, assists patrons and performs procedures related to circulation of materials; also routes patrons and telephone calls to appropriate destinations. May perform work of and/or direct routine tasks of the Circulation pages. May perform Assistant-level work in other departments.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
The following list identifies principal duties and responsibilities of the job. It is not a definitive list and other similar duties may be assigned. An asterisk (*) before any of the following items indicates duties and responsibilities which are not “essential functions” of the job as defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Assists patrons at service desk and over telephone by performing procedures related to circulation of materials. For example: checking out and renewing materials; placing holds; collecting fees and fines; registering borrowers; explaining policies and procedures and granting exceptions when necessary.
Deals with problem patrons, particularly those who disrupt normal use or operation of the Library, or attempt to unlawfully remove library materials from premises. Assists with maintenance of building security. For example: enforcing library policies for patron behavior; participating in disaster and emergency procedures, responding to materials theft detection system and other alarms; completing Incident Reports and calling police or other official assistance, when necessary.
Performs other procedures related to circulation of materials. For example: checking in materials; processing holds; processing overdue and other notices; emptying materials return bins; maintaining inventories, statistics, etc. May assist with processing lost/damaged materials, City Attorney letters collection agency, and other retrieval procedures.
Answers central switchboard. Takes messages. Routes patrons and telephone calls to appropriate destinations.
Prepares materials for shelving or filing.
Sensitizes, inspects, cleans as necessary, and sorts materials onto sorting shelves.
Searches stacks and other areas for claimed returned, traced, lost, missing, or other items, as assigned.
Makes closing and other necessary announcements over the public address system.*
Performs work of Circulation Page, as needed or assigned. May direct routine tasks of Circulation Page.
Performs Assistant-level work in other departments, as assigned.*
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Ability to provide courteous public service and to present clear explanations of established policies and procedures. Ability to think and act appropriately under pressure. Willingness and ability to grant logical exceptions to Library policies and procedures when warranted.
Skill in performing routine and non-routine procedures involving many steps. Ability to follow complex written and/or verbal instructions and to pay close attention to detail. Ability to work with limited direct supervision.
Ability to interact effectively with the Library’s automated system. Minimum skill level: accurate keyboarding at a minimum of 25 words per minute; ability to acquire and demonstrate knowledge of all parts of the circulation module at security level 3.
Capacity to be easily understood on voice telephone and public address systems. Minimum skill level : Demonstrated knowledge of proper telephone etiquette; ability to use public address and phone systems; ability to take messages and identify appropriate destinations.
Skill at accurately and efficiently sorting and shelving materials in alphanumeric order. Minimum skill level: ability to accurately shelve at a consistent rate of at least 100 items per hour; shelf read at 500 items per hour. Physical capacity to place materials on shelves at all shelving heights.
Ability to work in a team setting. Willingness to assist and support coworkers, contribute ideas, maintain flexibility, and be able to adapt to a rapidly changing environment.
Position Hours
Full-time, typically working 80 hours per two-week pay period on a flexible schedule which varies from week to week. May be scheduled to work days, evenings, Saturdays, and Sundays.
Part-time, typically working 20, 30, 40, 48, or 64 hours per two-week pay period (depending on position) on a flexible schedule which varies from week to week. May be scheduled to work days, evenings, Saturdays, and Sundays.

HUMAN RESOURCES JOB DESCRIPTION
JOB OBJECTIVE:
Varied clerical work of moderate responsibility within the Public Library system.
Supervision is received from a Library Associate or Librarian, who reviews work through periodic conferences, observation, and analysis of work performed.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities

Charges and discharges materials and equipment to the public;
Registers the public as library users
Handles reserves for specific library materials
Notifies users of fines and collects fines for overdue library materials.
Waits on the public in person and by telephone; gives out specific information and instructions.
Types labels and file cards.
Maintains and/or processes a variety of departmental records, forms, reports, logs, and files.
Processes incoming and outgoing mail; routes documents to the proper source.
Assists in the maintenance of library database; operates the library automated retrieval system for the variety of tasks.
Additional Job Duties
Shelves books as necessary.
Performs related duties as required.
Management reserves the right to add or amend duties at any time.

Ability to process incoming mail independently or route to proper source.
General knowledge of office practices and procedures.
Working knowledge of arithmetic and its uses in general office work.
Ability to compile information based on general instructions.
Ability to record information and to alphabetize.
Ability to type with accuracy at no specified speed.
Ability to gather and give basic information and instructions regarding the operation of the library.
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public and with fellow employees.
Ability to learn and follow varied procedures involved in office work, technical support, and circulation services.
Ability to maintain and work with a variety of records.
