Coordinates the design, planning, evaluation and integration of clinical education and
professional development activities so as to maintain consistent standards of practice and competencies in the delivery of patient care. Supports unit leadership team by demonstrating effective leadership, communication and conflict resolution skills.

The Trauma Registrar is a required component of the Level IV Trauma Center. The individual will be responsible for maintaining the current database (Collector Trauma Registry), diagnoses, procedures, complications and outcomes for the trauma patient population. Reporting to the Trauma Program Manager, the Registrar will work closely with the Trauma Medical Director to maintain, validate, retrieve and analyze Trauma Registry data related to the trauma patient’s injuries.
The Stroke Registrar is a necessary component of the Stroke Team and must ensure accurate data collection and entry. The individual must maintain the database in the Get With the Guidelines program, and work closely with the Stroke Program Coordinator and Trauma Program Coordinator to maintain, validate, retrieve and analyze Stroke Registry data related to the stroke patients care.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:
1. Current licensure to practice professional nursing in West Virginia.
2. Obtain certification in Basic Life Support within 30 days of hire date.
3. Obtain Certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS),Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), and Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) within 90 days of hire.
4. Obtain Instructor card in ACLS and PALS.
EXPERIENCE:
1. Three (3) years experience in an Emergency Medicine setting.

1. Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).

CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The statements described here are intended to describe the general nature of work being performed by people assigned to this position. 1. Develops and implements unit specific staff educational activities within the scope of nursing practice.
2. Collaborates with department leadership and support staff using indicators, such as, regulatory agencies, new policy development, new technology, patient case study and quality assurance monitors, to prioritize educational needs.
3. Assist the department leadership in the assessment of new departmental employee learning needs and development of employee orientation and education plan to ensure consistency in implementation validation and documentation methodologies.
4. Provides input and assists manager/director in annual review of unit Scope of Service, and performance improvement initiatives in conjunction with other departmental work teams
5. Facilitates the nursing unit’s education plan for nursing orientation, staff development, continuing education, competency validation, patient education and academic experiences.
6. Defines and coordinates orientation needs for all new unit employees. Individualizes orientation, with preceptor, evaluates orientees progress, and provides ongoing constructive feedback to both orientee, their preceptor and manager.
7. Assists in the development of annual competency analysis system requirements and criteria to assure knowledge, skills and attitudes that are necessary to fulfill role expectations in the institution.
8. Facilitates development of strong leadership behavior in unit staff including: a) orientation of charge nurse on unit; b) development of unit preceptors c) delegation skills, and d) effective interpersonal communication skills.
9. Supports an environment for innovation, creativity and empowerment with patient care delivery based on current nursing literature and research.
10. Initiates and/or participates in studies and research activities related to staff development, patient and health care.
11. Serves as a change agent in effecting appropriate changes within the health care delivery system as it relates to evidence based practice.
12. Demonstrates regard for the dignity, respect and safety of all patients, significant others, visitors and hospital personnel as defined in the philosophy of the organization.
13. Displays a caring and courteous attitude and represents the hospital in a positive manner to all persons noted above.
14. Participates in meeting the Goals and Objectives of Nursing Service Division and ensures the department contributes to the attainment of the Hospital’s Goals and Objectives
15. Serves as role model and promotes within the staff effective communication and conflict resolution skills, reflecting quality service attitudes and keeping consumer satisfaction in mind.
16. Contributes positively to the teamwork of the department by assisting other staff, contributing ideas and helping to resolve problems.
17. Exhibits strength to participate in, direct and maintain quality patient care in a high stress environment.
18. Participates in Performance Improvement activities as appropriate
19. Completes 45 and 90 day performance reviews with manager input as appropriate.
20. Assists with unit recruitment and retention initiatives.
21. Daily reviews the system report logs of the Emergency Department, Operating Room schedule, and Hospital admissions report for patients that meet criteria for inclusion in the Trauma Registry and Stroke Registry.
22. Reviews, analyzes, and interprets information and data on all identified Trauma Registry patients from numerous sources to identify injuries, procedures, complications, and other pertinent trauma registry data.
23. Assumes primary responsibility for concurrent data collected on specified data points.
24. Requests and obtains financial information, including hospital charges, hospital collections, and financial classification from financial services.
25. Reviews, analyzes, and interprets data from all available patient information systems including: staff and nursing progress notes and flow sheets, written and dictated anesthesia and operative notes, laboratory and blood bank reports, x-ray and other diagnostic radiographic findings, physical therapy notes, pathology reports, and autopsy/post mortem data.
26 Reviews and updates all in-patient charts on a daily basis when at all possible.
27. Accurately assigns appropriate codes for all collected information. FIPS codes, hospital, ambulance, and staff codes, E-codes, ICD 9/10 CM codes for all procedures and injuries, and complication codes.
28. Accurately enters collected data into the Trauma and Stroke Registries on a daily basis.
29. Meets data completion requirements to facilitate Quality Improvement activities.
30. In collaboration with the Trauma Program Manager, Stroke Program Manager, Trauma Medical Director, and Stroke Medical Director ensures compliance with all registry related Level 4 Trauma Center Designation criteria.
31. Provides statistical reporting via downloaded Collector Trauma Registry data to the West Virginia States Trauma and Emergency Care System for inclusion into the State Trauma Registry on a monthly basis.
32. Represents Reynolds Memorial Hospital in State meetings regarding the Trauma Registry.
33. Participates in professional development to assure skills and knowledge of trauma data information. Requires a minimum of 8 hours of pertinent continuing education hours annually, seeks opportunities to advance trauma knowledge base, and participates in the training of additional Trauma and Stroke Registry personnel.
34. Responsible for obtaining, abstracting, correcting and entering appropriate patient data, both concurrently and retrospectively on all trauma patients, in order to maintain and accurate/concurrent trauma patient database for the Trauma Program.
35. Responsible for obtaining, abstracting, correcting and entering appropriate patient data, both concurrently and retrospectively on all stroke patients, in order to maintain and accurate/concurrent stroke patient database for the Stroke Program.
36. Responsible for compiling statistics, preparing reports, generating reports on trauma populations and performing data searches for trauma related projects.
37. Must be able to function in the role of the Registered Nurse – Inpatient, job code 23060, as necessary to cover staffing needs that may arise.
