Xanterra Travel Collection is Hiring a General Manager Near Death Valley, CA

OverviewThe Oasis at Death Valley is a resort destination nestled in a lush oasis amid the vast, arid desert of Death Valley National Park, California, just two hours northwest of Las Vegas and 275 miles northeast of Los Angeles. Recently, the property underwent a transformational, multi-year renovation with a $150 million investment, introducing numerous new lodging options, new restaurant and retail operations, and retrofitting existing spaces. The resort has been transformed into a true gem in the desert. The resort features an 18-hole golf course (the world’s lowest course at 214 feet below sea level), seven restaurants and F&B outlets, four retail stores, a museum, two spring-fed swimming pools, two tennis courts, a service station, an RV park, an outdoor event garden, and conference and banquet facilities for 10-120 guests.
The destination includes two geographically distinct yet complementary hotel properties, each offering unique retail, dining, and entertainment options:
The Inn at Furnace Creek , a historic upscale, four diamond, 66-room Inn, with 22 recently added luxury casitas for a supreme luxury experience a world-famous flow-through pool, along with gym, spa services and lush gardens and landscaping surrounding the property. The property is truly an Oasis in the desert. The complex is situated in a stunning desert landscape, surrounded by towering mountains and vast expanses of arid terrain. The inn’s architecture reflects a blend of classic elegance and rustic charm. Built in the 1920s, it exudes a sense of old-world grandeur with its Spanish mission-style design, featuring terracotta roofs, stucco walls, and arched doorways.
The Ranch at Death Valley offers a new “Town Center” environment, including new lodging, retail, and dining experiences. Some of the offerings includea saloon, a general store, an old-time ice cream shop, a museum, pool & tennis courts. Lodging options at the Ranch include 80 new upscale cottages, in addition to 196 inviting family-orientated guest rooms. Each room is thoughtfully appointed with modern amenities and features relaxed, Southwestern-inspired décor.

Xanterra Travel Collection is seeking an experienced and dynamic General Manager to lead this beautiful and unique property. This strategic, guest-focused leader will oversee all aspects of resort operations, providing direction, support, and guidance to the management team and front-line staff. The General Manager will optimize the entire guest experience, drive financial performance and ensure high-quality products and services, and maintain compliance with company and brand standards.
Responsibilities
  • Strategic Objectives: Develop operational & resort strategic objectives, tactical implementation plans, and communication process to ensure program success. The GM will forge a continuous improvement work environment that focusses on the company’s “5 Pillar” strategic plan.
  • Service Culture: Own and drive luxury ‘destination resort’ level guest service standards across all guest facing and support functions across the properties. Inspire and drive a positive service culture and guest experience and provide a work environment in which employees can thrive.
  • Inspirational Leadership: Establish and maintain positive working relationships with all business partners and associates. Set the example through your own behavior and attitude.
  • Business Operations: Lead and provide oversight of a complex, high-volume services operation. Create and maintain service standards and expectations consistent with a luxury resort experience. Inspire and drive a positive service culture and guest experience.
  • Financial Achievement: Achieve and exceed financial goals to ownership. Responsible for business plan, annual budget, capital plan execution, financial reports and forecasting, labor management, expense control and diligent accounting practices.
  • Top-Line Revenue Delivery: Partner with sales force to establish sales & marketing plans and participate in opportunities to close business.
  • Human Resources Strategy: Partner with Human Resources to ensure effective hiring practices, implement employee culture improvements, enhance employee recreation activities for all employees, training initiatives, scheduling practices, and housing maintenance programs.
  • Infrastructure Management: Hands-on oversight of a complex operation in a remote location including maintenance of water management program, sewer treatment plant, wells, and landscape maintenance.
  • Sustainability: Support sustainable initiatives in all areas of the resort including building maintenance, engineering practices, safety initiatives, food selection & water conservation and interpretative training.
  • Continuous Process Improvement : Drive a continuous improvement culture. Develop operational strategic objectives, oversee the development of tactical implementation plans and execution process to ensure success at every point along the way of the guest journey.
QualificationsEDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
  • Bachelor’s degree with focus in hospitality or hotel management, business administration, finance or similar field of study preferred.
  • 15 years of progressive previous hospitality leadership experience, with 10 or more years in a senior leadership role with a multi-unit operation. Previous experience with remote locations a plus.
  • Proficient with MS Office desktop software.
  • Strong financial acumen and demonstrated experience with managing complex capital projects.
  • Strong relationship & communication skills. Able to convey ideas effectively to a variety of audiences and establish effective relationships.

  • Proven success establishing strategic goals, the ability to hold others accountable, and drive results.
  • Ability to provide direction and/or solve complex problems and multiple issues simultaneously.
  • Can make good decisions based upon the analysis and feedback of others.
  • Strong relationship & communication skills. Able to convey ideas effectively to a variety of audiences, establish effective relationships, and inspire others.
  • Strong financial acumen and demonstrated experience with overseeing multiple complex projects.
  • Experience in managing a large, diverse workforce.
SALARY RANGE: $150,000 - $200,000 plus incentive and housing
