SUMMARY:
- Responsible for fabricating, welding, joining, erecting, and/or repairing equipment, fixtures, and structures using various welding and construction techniques.
- Manages machines that manufacture and repair metal structures, tools, and equipment.
- Follows all safety protocols while performing duties.
- This is a journey-level job classification.
Pay: $27-$32/HR
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Operates safety equipment and uses safe work habits.
2. Sets up and operates hand and power tools common to the welding trade, such as shielded metal arc and gas metal arc welding equipment.
3. Lays out, positions, aligns, and secures parts and assemblies prior to assembly using straightedges, combination squares, calipers, and rulers.
4. Ignites torches or starts power supplies and strikes arcs by touching electrodes to metals being welded, completing electrical circuits.
5. Clamps, holds, tack-welds, heat-bends, grinds, or bolts component parts to obtain required configurations and positions for welding.
6. Operates manual or semi-automatic welding equipment to fuse metal segments using processes such as gas tungsten arc, gas metal arc, flux-cored arc, plasma arc, shielded metal arc, resistance welding, and submerged arc welding.
7. Welds components in flat, vertical, and/or overhead positions.
8. Detects faulty operation of equipment or defective materials and notifies the Field Superintendent. Assists with maintaining and repairing all machinery.
9. Consults blueprints and sketches to execute jobs and tasks to specification.
10. Monitors the fitting, burning, and welding processes to avoid overheating parts or causing warping, shrinking, distortion, or expansion of materials.
11. Examines workpieces for defects and measures workpieces with straightedges or templates to ensure conformance with specifications.
12. Monitors work environment for hazards and maintains healthy ventilation levels to avoid particle or gas inhalation.
13. Follows safety protocols, including wearing heat-resistant gloves, protective masks, and safety shoes.
JOB SPECIFICATIONS:
- High school education or equivalent.
- Requires a minimum of 11 years of welding experience and completion of an accredited two-year welder's training program, or an equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities have been achieved.
- Knowledge of welding techniques (oxygen-acetylene, electric arc, and TIG), tools, and equipment.
- Knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principles involved in the production of precision technical plans, blueprints, drawings, and models.
- Skills in the fabrication, joining, and repair of a variety of metal objects, equipment, fixtures, and structures.
- Knowledge of applicable codes.
- Ability to lift and carry heavy objects, and work under conditions of restricted movement, a dirty environment, air contamination, intense noise, and hazardous materials.
- Ability to keep hand and arm steady while moving the arm or while holding the hand in one position.
- Ability to quickly and repeatedly adjust the controls of a machine or a vehicle to exact positions.
- Ability to quickly move the hand, the hand together with the arm, or both hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble objects.
- Ability to make precise coordinated movements of the fingers of one or both hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble very small objects.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and designs.
- Maintains a thorough knowledge of universal standards and specifications to meet building codes and legal requirements.
- Understands strict safety regulations such as wearing heat-resistant gloves, protective masks, and safety shoes.
- Uses logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems.
- Attention to detail and mental concentration are necessary for accurately performing tasks.
- Ability to work independently and operate under pressure in a fast-paced environment with tight deadlines.
- Must be able to pass a drug screen and background check.
