Job Title: Lifeguard
FLSA Status: Non-exempt
Primary Function/Department: Aquatics
Reports to: Aquatics Director
Location: Not Specific
POSITION SUMMARY: Under the direct supervision of the Aquatics Director and in accordance with the Christian mission of the YMCA, the lifeguard is responsible for ensuring the safety of the facility patrons by preventing and responding to emergencies. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Maintains active surveillance of the pool area.
  • Knows and reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies, procedures, and the “safe-in-six” model; completes related reports as required.
  • Responds to challenges with possible solutions in a timely manner.
  • Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies, and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area.
  • Remains calm and objective when under pressure or when challenged by others.
  • Responds to emergency situations in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. Completes redwoods incident and accident reports as required.
  • Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed.
  • Ensures that the pool area, supplies and equipment are maintained at all times according to the YMCA standards. Checks pool and rescue equipment and promptly reports any problems.
  • Maintains safe swimming conditions in the pool, on deck and surrounding areas. Prevents accidents by maintaining constant observation of the pool area, enforcing health and safety rules and maintaining emergency readiness.
  • Make sure facility is properly open and closed. Areas must be secured at all times and when facility does not have a lifeguard on duty, all doors will be locked and checked by guards to insure they are locked.
  • Checks the pool for hazardous conditions when arriving.
  • Performs chemical testing when not guarding, as required, and takes appropriate action.
  • Enforces all Association and Branch policies.
  • Completes all other duties assigned by supervisor

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Minimum age of 17
  • Certifications: YMCA or Red Cross Lifeguarding Certification
  • Current YMCA Lifeguard or equivalent
  • Child abuse prevention training within 30 days of hire date
  • Ability to relate to people in a positive, but firm manner
  • Ability to be observant, safety conscious and able to react calmly and quickly in an emergency
  • Must demonstrate lifeguard skills, swimming proficiency, rescue and all pool equipment knowledge in accordance with YMCA standards
  • Ability to arrive early for their shift and in position to work prior to their scheduled time. Guard will be prepared to work. NO cell phone/ear bud usage while on the clock.
  • Ability to attend training events regularly to practice skills and stay on the cutting edge of aquatic safety.
WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
  • The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
  • Physically perform all skills required of a lifeguard.
  • Hear noises and distress signals in the aquatic environment, including in the water and anywhere around the zone of responsibility.
  • Constantly scans the pool so a swimmer in distress can be recognized within 10 seconds and provided assistance within an additional 10 seconds.
  • Remain alert with no lapses of consciousness.
  • See and observe all sections of an assigned zone or area of responsibility.
  • Always patrols at the edge of the pool or sits on an elevated lifeguard chair.
  • Always carries a rescue tube, whistle, mask and glove on his/her person ready for use.
  • Will always wear approved YMCA swimwear provided by YMCA. (Lifeguard shirt, shorts, with no shoes, see YMCA Dress Code for more detail)
