YMCA is Hiring a Camp/Program Director Near Westfield, MA

The YMCA of Greater Westfield is looking for a dynamic individual to oversee our day camp, and the programming for youth, teens and adults.
Job Description

Under the direction of the Program Operations Director the Camp/Program Director oversees the operations of YMCA Camp Shepard, a 105-acre facility day camp, year-round outdoor education/recreation programs, youth and adult sports/recreation and teen programs. As a member of the leadership team responsibilities include membership development, risk management, building supervision, annual giving campaigns, staffing, committees as designated, financial development, and attending YMCA functions. This position is responsible for modeling, teaching and exemplifying the qualities and values, which are inherent to the mission and purpose of the YMCA.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in human services, social services, recreation, business, education or equivalent field.
  • Two years to three years camp leadership experience.
  • Knowledge of and previous experience with outdoor education, youth and adult sports and teen programming preferred
  • Requirements within 30 days of hire include completion of: Child Abuse Prevention for Supervisory Staff; CPR; First Aid; AED; Bloodborne Pathogens.
  • YMCA Lifeguard Certification and Ropes Course Instructor preferred
  • YMCA Team Leader or Multi-team/Branch Leader certification preferred.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/OTHER

  • Sufficient strength, agility and mobility to perform essential functions and to supervise program activities in a wide variety of indoor and outdoor locations (depending upon the programs).
  • Ability to create and sustain a culture of excellence and work and thrive as part of a cohesive team.
  • Ability to lift/move heavy equipment and clean when necessary.
  • Will sometimes work early morning, late nights, and weekends.
  • Requires a flexible schedule to maintain consistency and productivity for this department.
  • Strong oral communication skills required for occasional public speaking responsibilities and excellent written communication skills with proficiency in all Microsoft Office programs.
Essential Functions
  • Organization, administration, program development, promotion and daily operation of Camp Shepard, Youth and Adult Sports and Recreation, and Teen Programs.
  • Actively market, develop, and promote Camp Shepard and other assigned programs
  • Recruits, hires, trains, develops, schedules and directs personnel and volunteers as needed. Reviews and evaluates staff performance. Develops strategies to motivate staff and achieve goals.
  • Schedule and organize pre-summer trainings and ensure staff are certified in required areas.
  • Ensures high quality member-focused programs through innovative program development, evaluations, and ongoing training of staff.
  • Develops and controls department budgets related to the position.
  • Ensure camp licensing requirements are met and a risk management policy and protocol is in place to ensure that all property and facilities meet code requirements and are safe for participant use.
  • Develop and facilitate outdoor education and adventure programs for school and community groups and expand recreation program offerings at camp year-round.
  • Oversee and provide leadership to teen programming intiatives.
  • Responsible for development and implementation of engaging youth and teen programs, and additional year-round and additional year round family programming and community engagement events.
  • Develops, implements, and manages operating plans to promote program and/or membership growth for the YMCA. Executes strategies to ensure that members and/or program participants connect with one another and connect with the YMCA.
  • Establishes new program activities and expands program within the community in accordance with strategic and operating plans.
  • Assist as needed with YMCA operations, building coverage, meetings and special events.
  • Achieve retention goals, as well as growth goals, for income and special events.
  • Provides leadership and support to the annual fundraising campaign and volunteer committees/boards as assigned. Assist in special events.
  • Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with community organizations.
  • Models relationship-building skills (including Listen First) in all interactions. Responds to all member and community inquiries and complaints in timely manner.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Program Operations Director and/or CEO.

  • Ensuring the safety and welfare of all of the children and adults involved in YMCA programming.
  • Developing and improving both new and existing youth and teen programs to meet the needs of children, parents and families.
  • To work collaboratively with other agencies, schools, and businesses in the community to provide desired outdoor program services and youth sports and recreation experiences.
  • To have Camp Shepard grow in usage and numbers of children being served each summer to meet the needs of all participants in a safe, unique, creative and exciting outdoor experience.
  • To grow Camp Shepard into a year round facility offering rental and retreat space and outdoor education and adventure opportunities to the community.
  • To recruit, train, and maintain a competent and committed camp and youth sports/recreation staff including volunteers.
  • To see the numbers of teens involved in the teen programming continually grow in an effort to teach volunteerism and a spirit of giving back to one’s community.
  • Departments operated within the approved budgets with respect to income and expenses.
  • The YMCA of Greater Westfield being recognized as a leading resource for summer camp, outdoor education, and youth/teen programming for the community.
