York School District One is Hiring a Literacy Coach 24-25 School Year Near York, SC

Qualifications: 

  • South Carolina certification as required for the position
  • Hold a Bachelor's Degree or higher and an the R2S Literacy Coach or R2S Literacy Specialist endorsement OR
  • Hold a Bachelor’s Degree or higher and are enrolled and actively pursuing the R2S Literacy Coach or R2S Literacy Specialist endorsement OR
  • Hold a master’s degree or higher in reading or a closely related field and be enrolled and actively pursuing the R2S Literacy Coach or R2S Literacy Specialist endorsement
  • Minimum of three years teaching experience at the middle/elementary/primary level or in specialized reading with primary/elementary students
  • Skills in human relations, leadership, and conflict management
  • Skills in computer word processing, spreadsheets, and databases
  • Excellent skills inaccurate record-keeping and written and oral communications
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable

Job Goal

  • Under general direction develops and implements literacy education (reading, writing, and phonics) programs for the
  • Develops and administers budgets, oversees curriculum development, promotes public awareness, provides teacher support and resources, and performs various other activities to promote and implement literacy

Job Description: 

  • Provides leadership in the continuing development and implementation of a district wide literacy (reading, writing, and phonics) curriculum which establishes high expectations for all students K-12.
  • Improves literacy education by serving as a resource to individual schools and teachers.
  • Identifies effective strategies for teaching reading, writing, listening and speaking and assists in their implementation.
  • Designs and delivers professional development sessions for teachers on effective literacy instruction strategies.
  • Models best practices in literacy instruction through co-teaching, demonstration lessons, and classroom observations
  • Provides ongoing support and coaching to teachers, including one-on-one consultations, collaborative planning sessions, and feedback on instructional practices.
  • Supports teachers in differentiating instruction to meet the diverse needs of students
  • Collaborates with teachers to integrate literacy skills across all subject areas
  • Assists teachers in using formative and summative assessments to monitor student progress in literacy.
  • Supports teachers in using data to set goals and develop action plans to improve student literacy outcomes.
  • Analyzes student data to identify trends and inform instructional practices.
  • Works with teachers to identify students who need additional support in literacy and develops intervention strategies.
  • Provides small group or one-on-one instruction to students as needed.
  • Monitors progress of the students receiving literacy interventions and adjusts supports as necessary.
  • Collaborates with school administrators, teachers, and other staff to create a cohesive literacy program.
  • Communicates effectively with parents and guardians about students’ literacy development and ways to support literacy at home.
  • Participates in school and district meetings, committees, and professional learning communities.
  • Keeps informed of new developments in literacy education by reading professional literature; reviewing new materials and exemplary programs; and participating in local, state, and national conferences.
  • Promotes the professional growth of K-12 literacy education teachers by encouraging active participation in related national, state and local organizations and activities.
  • Promotes improved coordination and articulation in literacy instruction at the elementary, middle and high school levels.
  • Increases public awareness and understanding of the district literacy program by speaking to PTAs/PTOs and other civic organizations and through general communication with the public.
  • Meets monthly with administration to discuss progress (review data), issues, and concerns based on goals.

Knowledge:

  • Knowledgeable of all state and federal regulations and compliance requirements applicable to educational programs.
  • Knowledge of the records, forms and reports which must be prepared and maintained.
  • Has thorough and comprehensive knowledge of all aspects of literacy education.
  • Knowledge of fiscal management practices.
  • Knowledge of curriculum development.
  • Knows how to keep abreast of changes in policy, standards, procedures, and regulations pertinent to job

  • Ability to comprehend, interpret, and apply state and federal regulations related to literacy education.

Terms of Employment:

190 days per school year; salary and work year to be established by the Board

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions of the Board's policy on the Evaluation of Certified Personnel.
