YSS is Hiring a Lighthouse Youth Specialist - PT Near Des Moines, IA

ResponsibilitiesThe Youth Specialist will supervise and care for Transitional Living Center clients during assigned hours, while providing an atmosphere of mutual respect and trust. May work both daytime and overnight hours as scheduled or as needed. Ensures that all basic needs of clients are met, and that the youth are provided with a safe, stable environment in which to work toward independence. Responsibilities include:
  • Conduct initial interviews with potential clients and refer them to the Lighthouse TLC Coordinator for further assessment. Assist the Lighthouse TLC Coordinator in determining appropriateness for TLC program.
  • Assist youth who are not eligible for program services in finding suitable resources.
  • Provide program information to potential clients, parents, referral sources, and other groups, both in person and over the phone, as needed.
  • Supervise TLC clients during assigned hours, which could include day, evening, weekend, and overnight shifts.
  • Relate to clients in a caring, supportive manner, while enforcing program rules and guidelines consistently, firmly, and fairly.
  • Oversee client activities such as chores, curfew, bedtime, wake-up, and personal hygiene. Is aware of clients' presence and behavior at all times.
  • Be aware of clients' guests, monitor their actions, and ask them to leave if needed.
  • Assist clients in meeting basic needs such as food, clothing, bedding, personal care products, transportation, and safety. May take youth to outside sources to meet these needs, if necessary.
  • Conduct urinalysis tests as needed, is aware of clients' behavior, and handles possible usage appropriately. Conduct room searches, if needed, to ensure that there are no weapons or illegal substances in the facility.
  • Alert on-call staff of major incidents or emergencies. Conduct emergency bed intakes as needed.
  • Attend to clients' medical needs, dispense medication, and complete all necessary documentation.
  • Oversee clients' chores, room cleaning, and extra assigned work to ensure that they are done properly.
  • Ensure that client turns in required percentage of income to Associate Director for savings account.
  • Inspect facility for maintenance problems and report issues to Associate Director that cannot be resolved.
  • Ensure safety, cleanliness, and appearance of the facility.
  • Assist with inventory of household supplies, personal care products, and food items. Order and pick up Food Bank supplies as needed.
  • Assist clients with transportation to appointments, DHS, job hunting and other program-related activities as needed.
  • Work with clients on life skills such as cooking, laundry, grocery shopping, budgeting, interpersonal relationships, personal hygiene, anger management, self-esteem, social skills, problem solving, job hunting, transportation, and leisure activities.
  • Work with clients to ensure that they complete paperwork such as DHS application, Living Skills Assessment, Daniel Memorial, etc., as requested by the Lighthouse TLC Coordinator.
  • Conduct group activities and House meetings to resolve conflicts as needed.
  • Complete all necessary logging, shift reports, and other documentation.
  • Attend all Team meetings and Staff meetings unless the Lighthouse TLC Coordinator is notified of conflict in advance.
  • Provide phone and receptionist support during non-office hours and in the absence of the Secretary.
  • Provide back-up support for the Administrative Assistant, Education Coordinator, Lighthouse TLC Coordinator and other staff as needed, and as time allows.
  • Attend in-service trainings as needed.
  • Attend bi-weekly or monthly supervisory meeting with the Associate Director or the Case Manager.

  • A High School Diploma/equivalent is required.
  • One year of experience working in the human services field.
  • Travel, including transporting clients, is required for this position. For YSS insurance purposes, you must:
    • be 21 years of age,
    • have a valid, state-issued, driver’s license,
    • have a clean driving record, and
    • have adequate insurance coverage per YSS policy.

The IDEAL Candidate
  • Has a bachelor's degree in Human Services or a related field
  • Speaks a language(s) in addition to English.
  • Has knowledge and understanding gained through personal experience and the ability to draw on that experience to support others on their journey to stability, recovery, and healing.
