Job Title: Controls Specialist

Job Description

This position is responsible for providing technical direction for control systems, program configuration, installation of systems, and troubleshooting system problems on distributed/process control systems. The responsible individual is expected to provide technical advice and direction during the design and implementation phases of projects. This position is responsible for providing technical support necessary to maintain the reliable and efficient operation of the control systems security and asset management. The incumbent will work closely with the Operations Department to identify and correct shortcomings in the plant control systems. They are to be the expert on issues surrounding control systems and will represent the plant on various internal and external teams such as applicable controls user groups and at various internal and external meetings such as I&C Technical Forums.

Responsibilities

• Provide technical direction for control systems, program configuration, and installation of systems.
• Troubleshoot system problems on distributed/process control systems.
• Offer technical advice and direction during design and implementation phases of projects.
• Maintain the reliable and efficient operation of the control systems security and asset management.
• Work closely with the Operations Department to identify and correct shortcomings in the plant control systems.
• Represent the plant on internal and external teams such as applicable controls user groups and at various meetings such as I&C Technical Forums.
• Perform periodic inspections of the control rooms to determine the status of equipment.
• Manage a preventive maintenance and calibration program for instrumentation and control systems.
• Develop and manage functional tests for control systems.
• Support and transition between multiple projects.
• Check cables and wiring in the field.
• Perform and assist in site walk downs.
• Prepare cost estimates.
• Support start-up activities.
• Prepare layouts and conceptual designs.

Essential Skills

• Experience with instrument and/or controls in a plant or industrial environment.
• Experience with programmable logic controllers (PLC) and/or distributed control systems (DCS).
• Moderate to high level of proficiency in PLC, DCS, or TCS control system platforms (ABB S , Siemens T3000).
• Field troubleshooting experience on control strategy, field instrumentation, and control systems equipment failures.
• Experience with networks, planning, designing, implementing, or testing security measures to protect data and technology equipment.
• Familiarity with Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) requirements.
• Experience with networking protocols such as Modbus Serial, DNP3, OPC, and Ethernet.
• Experience with Microsoft Windows operating system management including installing system updates, patches, antivirus software, and firewall management.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Four-year degree, two-year technical certification, and/or an associate’s degree in electronics preferred or equivalent experience required.
• Power Generation experience preferred.
• Proficiency in computer-based platforms.
• Solid Electrical knowledge.
• Configuration/graphic skills in one or more platforms: Ovation, Foxboro, ABB, or PLC.
• Experience with field support.
• Experience with control narrative and markup.
• Experience checking cables and wiring in the field.
• Experience with cost estimating in sub-disciplines.
• Experience developing IO lists.
• Ability to build effective relationships with plant staff, design engineering staff, and vendors.

Work Environment

Onsite at a plant. Time will be split between a controls office environment and out in the field inside the plant. Physical requirements include walking, climbing stairs, ladder climbing, kneeling, squatting, bending, and reaching.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $70.00 - $70.00/hr.
