What are the responsibilities and job description for the Pianist, Once on this Island position at ActUp Theater?
ActUp Theater is looking for an experienced pianist to be a key member of our live band for the upcoming production of Once on this Island. The pianist will play a vital role in driving the musical narrative and supporting the vocal performances throughout the show. Collaborating closely with the musical director and other musicians, the pianist will help bring the rich sound of Once on this Island to life on stage.
Reports To: This position reports to the Production Manager.
Technical Skills:
- Proficiency in Piano/Keyboard: Exceptional skill in piano playing, with a strong understanding of genres that are central to the Once on this Island score.
- Music Reading Abilities: Ability to read sheet music and chord charts, with the flexibility to adapt to changes in arrangements and improvisational sections.
- Versatility: Capable of performing a range of piano styles, from powerful ballads to rhythmic accompaniments, that align with the show's diverse musical demands.
- Coordination with Ensemble: Work closely with the musical director, vocalists, and other instrumentalists to ensure a seamless integration of the piano within the overall sound.
- Sound Sensitivity: A refined ear for dynamics and expression, able to adjust playing style to enhance the emotional depth of each scene.
Required Qualifications:
- Play piano for all rehearsals and live performances of Once on this Island, ensuring consistent and high-quality musical support.
- Collaborative Work: Work in harmony with the musical director and other musicians to create a unified and powerful performance.
- Timely Delivery: Attend all scheduled rehearsals and performances, delivering top-notch piano accompaniment according to the production timeline.
- Effective Communication: Maintain open and clear communication with the production team to ensure all musical needs are met.
- Adaptability: Be prepared to adjust to any changes in the score or musical direction during the production process.
- Experience with and understanding of activities, programs, and productions of ActUp Theater
- Familiarity with student-initiated arts activities and programs
