General Summary: Provides leadership in on-campus residential areas, including residence halls and/or apartments, and serves primarily in the roles of supervisor, educator, and administrator. The Area Coordinator is responsible for fostering residential communities that support the growth and success of students. This position reports directly to the Director of Residence Life and is a key member of the Residence Life leadership team. The Area Coordinator may have the opportunity to focus on areas that align with the institutional mission, which could include health and wellness, leadership, or other student development initiatives.
The salary for this position reflects compensation that includes on-campus housing provided at a reduced rate, enhancing the overall benefits of this live-on role.
Essential Job Functions:
- Adheres to institutional and departmental policies, procedures, and regulations.
- Provides leadership in supporting student well-being, including organizing and promoting programs that encourage wellness, personal growth, and academic success.
- Supervises and mentors graduate assistants and resident assistants.
- Participates in the recruitment, selection, training, and evaluation of graduate assistants and resident assistants
- Maintains open lines of communication with Residence Life staff and students.
- Supports operational functions for residential areas, such as building walkthroughs, room inspections, maintenance requests, hall openings/closings, and other administrative tasks.
- Participates in the Residence Life on-call rotation, responding to student concerns and emergency situations.
- Collaborates with various campus departments, such as Counseling Services, Dean of Students office, Campus Safety, and other student support services.
- Represents the Office of Residence Life on institutional committees and at campus events as needed.
- Contributes to departmental projects and initiatives, such as service projects and campus-wide task forces.
- Assists in the management of health and safety protocols as required by institutional policies.
REQUIREMENTS
Education: Master's Degree in Higher Education Administration or related field from an accredited college/university
Experience: At least three years of professional experience in higher education following graduate school is required; three to five years of experience in residence life is preferred.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
- Possess strong knowledge of residential life philosophy and student development theory.
- Demonstrated leadership and supervisory skills.
- Possess interpersonal/human relation skills; commitment to diversity; and conflict resolution skills.
- Possess strong detail management skills; organizational/planning skills; and ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Knowledge of current educational trends, politics of thought and protocols.
- Good listening skills and communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and to maintain confidentiality.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule.
- Proficiency in Microsoft office products: Word, and Excel and electronic mail.
Other:
- Irregular and on-call hours are required
- Due to the nature of the position and on-call responsibilities area coordinator is required to live in on campus housing; housing is provided with the position.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Intermittent sitting, standing, stooping, crouching, walking and occasional moving of heavy objects. Work is performed in an office or residence hall, with potential exposure to noise, diseases, chemicals, inclement weather, dirt, grease or dust.
