What Success Means In This Position
The Supervisor of School Counseling Services provides leadership, support, and oversight for the school’s academic counseling and graduation coaching programs. This role ensures that all students receive high-quality academic, career, and personal counseling services, as well as support in achieving graduation requirements. The Supervisor will work closely with school administration, teachers, students, and families to promote student success, address academic or behavioral challenges, and ensure timely graduation.
Position Description & Expectations
Key Responsibilities:
- Leadership and Supervision:
- Supervise and support the school’s academic counselors, providing guidance on student case management and professional development.
- Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of counseling and coaching programs, making recommendations for improvement.
- Serve as the point of contact for school counseling-related issues and ensure the smooth operation of the counseling department.
- Develop the master schedule with the administrative team.
- Spearheads the preparation of diploma lists and identification of honor graduates in preparation for the Senior Honors Program and Graduation in collaboration with the administrative team and other essential stakeholders.
- Program Development and Implementation:
- Develop and monitor strategies to assist students who are at risk of not meeting graduation requirements.
- Ensure that the school counselors provide targeted support to at-risk students, including academic tutoring, intervention strategies, and success plans.
- Plan and/or promote programs which enhance the academic, social, or emotional growth of students, e.g., Curriculum Fair, Career Fair, Underclass Honors Assembly & Senior Honors Program, Graduation, opportunities for student enrichment and/or remediation, scholarship opportunities and parent informational programs.
- Develop and maintain partnerships with external stakeholders and institutions such as colleges/universities, trade schools, etc.
- Participate in student recruitment opportunities to support school enrollment goals.
- Collaboration and Communication:
- Collaborate with teachers, administrators, parents, and external agencies to create a supportive environment for students’ academic and personal growth.
- Communicate regularly with students and families to provide information on graduation requirements, college/career opportunities, and counseling resources.
- Coordinate with the school administration to ensure that student services align with school goals and policies.
- Support the creation of Section 504 plans and actively participate in Special Education meetings, as needed.
- Assist to identify issues that affect poor performance and participate in and support students in the Student Assistance Team (SAT) process, as needed.
- Counseling Services:
- Offer direct counseling services for students as needed, focusing on academic achievement, career exploration, and personal well-being.
- Address concerns related to student behavior, mental health, or academic performance and recommend appropriate interventions.
- Assist students with the completion of the college admissions process inclusive of FAFSA completion, application submission, and providing transcripts.
- Meet with seniors and families to provide updates on their graduation status.
- Ensure that students are aware of requirements for graduation and college admission, as well as any NCAA requirements that may be necessary for athletic participation.
- Data Analysis and Reporting:
- Analyze student data to track academic progress, identify trends, and intervene where necessary.
- Prepare and present reports related to counseling services, graduation rates, and student outcomes to school leadership.
- Organizing and promoting standardized assessment opportunities and interpreting test results to students and/or parents on request.
- Ensure that appropriate, accurate information is maintained in each student’s permanent, cumulative record and is in accordance with DOE and NOLA Public Schools requirements.
- Schedule students to develop and maintain Individual Graduation Plans.
Qualifications
- Master’s degree in School Counseling, Educational Leadership, or a related field.
- Valid Louisiana Certificate with at least three years of relevant experience – School Certified School Counselor in the state of Louisiana.
- Experience with school counseling, scheduling, and maintenance of student files.
- 10 years of experience in school counseling or education, with experience in a supervisory role preferred.
- Strong knowledge of graduation requirements, counseling techniques, and student support systems.
- Ability to collaborate with diverse teams and communicate effectively with students, staff, and parents.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks effectively.
- Proficiency in using student management software and data analysis tools.
