What are the responsibilities and job description for the Public Works Technician/Water Operator position at Alpine City?
Job Summary
This position will assist the public works lead with the operation, maintenance and construction of the City’s culinary water and pressurized irrigation systems, including the operation of wells, booster pump stations, pressure-reducing valves, filters, water storage tanks/reservoirs, SCADA system, automated meter read system/meters and other similar tasks. While the operation of the City’s two water systems will be the main focus, there will be times when this position will assist with other tasks within the public works department. The position is full-time with full Alpine City benefits including health/dental insurance, vacation time, sick time, State retirement and other benefits according to city policies.
Duties
- Learn all aspects of the operation and maintenance of the City’s two water systems, including the distribution system, wells, booster pump stations, pressure-reducing valves, filters, water storage tanks/reservoirs, SCADA system, automated meter read system/meters, fire hydrants and all related aspects of the systems.
- Installation and maintenance of water meters and automated meter read system.
- Assist other staff with the maintenance of water services, valves, fire hydrants, water main repairs and all other aspects of the water systems.
- Learn the operation of the water systems including pressure zones, location of facilities, troubleshooting issues, SCADA system and all other operations within the systems.
- Ability to learn the operation of tools/equipment used in the operation and maintenance of the water systems.
- Must be willing to work as a laborer in trenches, set/read water meters, perform heavy physical labor, and work overtime when necessary to keep water systems in operation and other similar tasks.
Experience
- Someone with a mechanical mind that has the ability to troubleshoot problems and work towards a resolution.
- The job does not require experience with operating light and heavy equipment; however applicant must be willing to be trained to operate the equipment.
- Applicants must be willing to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others, communicate effectively, take direction from others they are assigned to work under and tolerate weather extremes in the workplace.
- Considerable emphasis is placed on working in a team-oriented environment.
Minimum Qualifications
- Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.
- High school graduation or GED, and one (1) year of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- The successful candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment drug screen and a criminal background investigation.
- Must have a valid Utah driver’s license and obtain a valid Utah CDL with 60 days of being hired.
- Must obtain a Grade II Utah water operator certification within one (1) year of being hired.
