Location Details/Description: Lake Roosevelt National Recreation Area Headquarters, Coulee Dam, Washington. Members' housing is within a few hundred feet of the headquarters office, about half a mile walk from the local grocery store, and just under a mile to access the tailwaters of the Columbia River below the historic Grand Coulee Dam. Located in the high desert of eastern Washington in the Columbia River watershed, Lake Roosevelt was created by the Grand Coulee Dam and offers visitors recreational opportunities including fishing, boating, swimming, hiking, historic sites, and scenic views. The nearby community of Grand Coulee has a Safeway and a small hospital, among other facilities. Coulee Dam is located about a one hour drive from Omak - which has several big box stores - and two hours from Spokane - the second largest city in Washington.

Position Overview: This position is an opportunity to work with the Integrated Resource Management Division at Lake Roosevelt National Recreation Area in eastern Washington. The primary focus of the crew will be vegetation management in the developed areas of the park to include non-native invasive plant removal by hand and chemical means but may also include inventory and monitoring of plant species, historic and cultural plant documentation, and aquatic invasive species support. Members should have skills and interest in ecological science as well as field work. This position also offers opportunities to collaborate on challenging ecological issues with local governments, adjacent landowners, and tribal members. Additional opportunities to work alongside other National Park Service Divisions will be made available throughout the term of the appointment.

Schedule: Monday - Thursday 6:30 am to 5:00 pm. Occasional weekend and holiday work will be required. Work over 40 hours per week will be credited to future time off.

Position Benefits

Living Allowance: The ACE Member is expected to contribute ~40 hours/week and will receive a living allowance of $550/week to offset the costs of food and incidental expenses, dispersed bi-weekly.

Public Land Corps Hiring Authority: Members serving under this agreement may be eligible for a federal hiring authority upon completion of their term of service and 640 hours of service. If the duration of a PLC-eligible term is not long enough for Members to accrue 640 hours of service (~16 weeks), the total hours served at the completion of the term may be eligible to be combined with hours accrued from another PLC-eligible term to meet the 640 hours requirement. PLC projects also include specific eligibility requirements such as age and citizenship. Housing: ACE members will be accommodated in provided housing at no cost for the duration of their term. Members will have their own bedroom in a 3 bedroom 1.5 bathroom house near the office. Shared space in the house includes a living room, kitchen, and garage. Housing is located within easy walking distance of the headquarters office.

Provided Training/Orientation: ACE members will receive position specific training and an orientation outlining ACE policies and procedures, clear guidance on prohibited activities, and networks for support. Specific training may include:

  • AIS Training
  • MOCC Training
  • Boat Inspections / Decontamination Training
  • Plant Identification
  • Pesticide specific training including safety, PPE, equipment, and applicable handling and use requirements.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Members must be a U.S. citizen or Permanent Resident, as required by U.S. government contracts
  • Willing and able to represent ACE and the partner organization in a professional, positive, and enthusiastic manner.
  • Ability to be both self-directed/work alone, and be a positive, contributing member of a group.
  • If driving is required: A valid driver's license and an insurable driving record (documentation to be provided upon request).
  • Willing to undergo and must pass the required criminal history checks
  • ACE participates in E-Verify and will provide the federal government with your Form I-9 information when you are hired to confirm that you are authorized to work in the U.S.
  • Ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • ACE Members will need to complete bi-weekly timesheets, beginning of term feedback forms, end of term evaluations and for longer terms, a mid-term evaluation.

Preferred:

  • Competitive applicants for this position can hold or be pursuing a bachelor's degree in biological, ecological, and/or environmental science or studies and/or have relevant experience in similar subject areas.
  • Knowledge of plant biology, botany, ecology, or related environmental fields.
  • Ability and willingness to load, mix, and apply pesticides.
  • Ability to interact in a professional manner with the public.
  • Deep interest in the botanical and ecological sciences and protecting public lands.
  • Physical Demands: Requires work outdoors in heat, cold, wet, and dry conditions AND work indoors at a computer; ability to carry weight (50lbs) over rough terrain; and camp overnight in field conditions.
  • Travel: This position may require daily travel of up to 5 hours per day of car travel. Travel by boat and ferry may also occur. Occasional overnight travel may also be required.

Environmental Conditions/Hazards: The ACE member(s) may encounter environmental conditions/hazards including extreme heat or cold, rocky terrain, swamp or wetland conditions, biting insects, and potentially dangerous wildlife. The member is expected to conduct duties in a safe and orderly manner so as not to endanger self, fellow staff/members or resources. Members will have the opportunity and are encouraged to attend Operational Leadership (OL) courses when they are hosted by the park. Safety discussions will occur as needed throughout the term in order to ensure the wellbeing of all members and staff.

Vehicle and Equipment Use/Safety: If a vehicle is required for the accomplishment of the duties, one will be provided by the Lake Roosevelt NRA or ACE. Any tools required for the accomplishment of the duties will be provided by the National Park Service. Use of personal protective equipment (PPE), typically provided by the National Park Service, will be mandatory for any activity that requires it. Strict adherence to National Park Service and ACE equipment training, certification and safety protocols is required.
