What are the responsibilities and job description for the Community Rebuilds - Sustainability Coordinator position at AmeriCorps?
Community Rebuilds - Sustainability Coordinator
Community Rebuilds was founded in 2007 with the purpose of replacing old, dilapidated trailer homes in Moab, Utah with energy-efficient houses for low income residents. Community Rebuilds has created an innovative social enterprise, building 57 affordable housing using conventional and natural building materials and methods to meet the intersecting climate and housing crises. Our building model includes : recruiting and training volunteers, apprentices, interns, and homeowners to construct homes; utilizing simple architectural designs that reduce design costs and encourage replicability; incorporating healthy, sustainable, and natural materials such as straw and earthen plasters; and using recycled, salvaged and donated building materials wherever possible. Our homes also feature passive and active solar design with highly insulative wall systems, significantly decreasing future heating and cooling costs for homeowners. Community Rebuilds is currently partnering with the Moab Area Community Land Trust (MACLT), a fellow community-based affordable housing non-profit, to create twelve permanently affordable homes. In addition to providing education opportunities to our apprentices and homeowners, we love engaging the community and facilitating educational opportunities. Community Rebuilds regularly hosts hands-on natural building and permaculture workshops as well as extended internships and apprenticeships, and have trained over 300 apprentices in natural and sustainable building techniques.
