- The role of the reading specialist is to provide high quality, evidence based structured literacy instruction to students with reading challenges in order to close the learning gap.
- The reading specialist plays an essential role implementing a multi-tiered system of support for the school.
- The reading specialist helps support colleagues with the implementation of structured literacy strategies across the school to ensure a positive school culture that supports students with reading difficulties. The reading specialist provides direct support to school leaders, teachers, and staff on literacy instruction and intervention. This includes programming, standards, curriculum, assessment, and professional learning. Works to ensure evidence based instructional practices are integrated into instruction and daily practices that are aligned with the district’s strategic plan.
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college/university
- Current Kansas State Teaching License on file in the District Office.
- Reading Specialist endorsement preferred
- Administers diagnostic assessment(s) to students, analyzes data and determines instructional path based on areas of strength and learning gaps.
- Provides high quality, evidence based structured literacy instruction to students with reading challenges in order to close the learning gap. This includes individual and small group instruction for identified students.
- Partners with district and building leaders to ensure a highly effective multi-tiered system of support for students
- Design and lead high-quality, engaging literacy professional learning opportunities for educators
- Collaborates with colleagues and supports the implementation of structured literacy strategies across the school to ensure a positive school culture that supports students with reading difficulties.
- Provides direct support to school leaders, teachers, and staff on literacy instruction and intervention. Works to ensure evidence based instructional practices are integrated into instruction and daily practices that are aligned with the district’s strategic plan.
- Collaborates with classroom teachers to help adjust instructional approaches for students with reading difficulties
- Gives demonstration lessons in the teaching of reading as requested or required.
- Confers with the principal on the needs of the multi-tiered system of support
- Assists in the establishment and development of school and district literacy curriculum.
- Provides reading resources for staff, students and parents.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Requires the ability to sit and/or stand for prolonged periods.
- Occasionally requires the ability to manually move, lift, carry, pull or push heavy objects or materials.
- Occasionally requires the ability to stoop, bend and/or reach.
- Must be able to work in noisy and crowded environments.
- Requires regular attendance and/or physical presence at the job.
