POSITION SUMMARY:
The Public Safety Patrol Officer will be responsible for the overall protection of life and property by recognizing needs, planning shift based on current situations, conducting regular patrols and daily contact with campus community. The Public Safety Patrol Officer will maintain a high level of visibility on campus to deter crime and be able to assist the campus community and visitors. The Patrol Officer will maintain a professional relationship with the Yellow Springs Police Department and the Miami Township Fire Department as well as with other federal, state or local agencies.

Antioch College is located in the village of Yellow Springs, Ohio – a vibrant progressive community nestled between two nature preserves. Yellow Springs is located 55 miles from the fast-growing city of Columbus, Ohio, and 30 miles from the Dayton metro area.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Emergency Preparedness and Response
  • Implement Emergency Response Protocols during an emergency situation.
  • Immediately contacting 911, Public Safety Coordinator, and Student Life Duty Phone during an emergency.
  • Follow directions given by the Director of Public Safety, local authorities or other college administration during an emergency.
  • Public Safety Crime Prevention and Response
  • Engages in formalized campus-oriented problem solving and crime prevention measures whenever possible.
  • Utilizes collaborative partnerships to identify and reduce internal and external threat.
  • Analyzes campus needs and develops strategies and plans to improve public safety with the Public Safety Coordinator.
  • Provides patrol services including, but not limited to:
  • Patrolling buildings, grounds, and parking areas
  • Being visible to the campus community
  • Investigation of incidents as appropriate
  • Crime prevention
  • Maintenance of order of overall campus
  • Responding to emergencies
  • Implement the Emergency Response Protocols during an emergency
  • Victim assistance
  • Providing parking lot and building escorts
  • Completing Incident Reports for all criminal activity, fire alarms, and other situations that would warrant a report
  • First-aid, CPR, and AED
  • Parking and traffic control
  • Contacting state and local law enforcement personnel when appropriate
  • Opening college buildings and rooms for college employees, when the campus is closed to the extent permitted by college policy, and
  • Opening college buildings and rooms for college employees when the campus is open and personnel from the Office of Physical Plant are not on duty, to the extent permitted by college policy
  • Decisively responds to calls for service, emergent situations, and critical incidents. Conducts an initial assessment of the situation, determines appropriate course of action, and take appropriate steps consistent with established training and standards
  • Acts as first responder to fire and life safety incidents and criminal activity
  • Acts as incident commander until the incident is resolved, relieved by law enforcement, fire or emergency safety personnel or relieved in accordance with instruction from superior
  • Establishes security protection during scheduled and unscheduled campus closings
  • Responsible for initiating contact with local law enforcement personnel where appropriate regarding incidents of suspected criminal activity
  • Secure scene until the arrival of law enforcement personnel
  • Responsible for monitoring campus facilities to ensure that doors and windows are secure when appropriate, building security is maintained, critical utilities are operational and lighting fixtures are operational
  • Secures doors and windows as required and reports unlocked doors and windows as required
  • Responsible for maintaining communication, while on duty by phone
  • Responsible for completing, or ensuring the completion of, required reports for accidents, injuries, and incidents observed by or reported to the incumbent per policy.
  • Responsible for promptly notifying the Director of Public Safety and the Student Life Duty Phone of all emergencies causing bodily harm or property damage or substantially and adversely affecting campus operations
  • At times the Patrol Officer may have to educate members of the campus community in regard to College policies as well as local, state, and federal laws when a situation arises. This should be done in an educational manner and not as a form of chastising.

  • Community Relations
  • Maintains effective working relationships with appropriate personnel in state, county, and local law enforcement and first responder agencies
  • Demonstrate effort in utilizing community engagement with students, faculty, and staff as well as visitors to campus. Examples: Attending student performance events or simply having an idle conversation with Antioch community members with an emphasis on engaging with students.
  • Attending all Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion trainings offered by the College.
  • Practice Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in all situations. Always practice responding to all individuals with a high degree of respect and equality. Remember the Public Safety philosophy is to always treat every individual with
the same dignity and respect that you would expect if you were in a similar situation. Must have the ability to check moral values and personal opinions before starting your shift regarding LGBTQIA persons and events as well as racial, ethnic, and religious biases.
  • Decisions and responses should never be based on bias. Bias is not limited to the examples above.
REQUIRED SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • At least two years of experience in law enforcement, security, preparedness or public safety or related field
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Good written communications skills
  • Sensitivity to and ability to work collaboratively in a diverse college environment
  • Must be certified in CPR, First Aid and AED or become certified within two months of employment and must maintain certification at all times
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and meet all eligibility requirements to drive a college vehicle and be insured under the colleges automobile
ENVIRONMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS
Primarily a patrol environment, which will include exposure to all types of adverse weather conditions and contact with difficult or threatening persons and incidents. Respond to emergencies such as situations involving hazardous materials, fire, smoke and criminal activity. All Public Safety staff are considered “essential personnel” and may be called in on days off or asked to stay past their shift to assist with emergencies, college events or call-offs from Public Safety staff. This also pertains to holiday coverage as well. The Public Safety Department operates 24/7 365 days a year.

The person holding this position is considered a “responsible employee” (formerly mandated reporter) under Title IX of the Education Amendments Act of 1972 and must report known incidents of sex and gender-based discrimination and harassment to the Antioch College Title IX Office.
