Description
The ACES Center for Safe Schools seeks a School Safety Consultant to support and enhance safety initiatives in educational environments. This role requires expertise in school security, emergency preparedness, and risk assessment to help institutions create and maintain safe learning spaces. The ideal candidate will collaborate with school leaders, educators, law enforcement, and community stakeholders to develop and implement comprehensive safety strategies.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Interact in a positive and professional manner with district representatives, students, and colleagues
- Participates in assigned trainings and staff development opportunities
- Represents ACES in a positive manner through personal conduct, attendance, and completion of assigned duties.
- Assess school safety policies, procedures, and infrastructure to identify areas for improvement.
- Develop and implement emergency response plans, crisis management protocols, and school safety initiatives.
- Provide training for school staff, administrators, and students on safety procedures, threat assessments, and emergency response.
- Collaborate with local law enforcement, emergency responders, and government agencies to strengthen school security measures.
- Conduct site assessments and risk evaluations to enhance security within educational settings.
- Advise school leadership on best practices for maintaining a safe learning environment.
- Lead workshops, presentations, and professional development sessions for educators and staff.
- Engage with school boards, parent groups, and community organizations to promote school safety awareness.
- Monitor and analyze emerging safety concerns, including bullying prevention, violence intervention, and mental health crisis response.
Knowledge of:
Candidates must possess expertise in one or more of the following areas:
- Educational and Institutional Safety: Understanding of school culture, student behavior, and day-to-day school operations.
- Emergency Management: Disaster preparedness, crisis response, and risk mitigation strategies.
- Law Enforcement or Security: Experience as a police officer, school resource officer, or security professional.
- School Safety & Security: Implementation of school safety programs and security measures.
- Federal or State Agency Operations: Knowledge of agencies such as FEMA, DHS, DOJ, or similar organizations involved in school security and risk assessment.
- Remain current in ACES policies and procedures, inclusive of assigned program specific policies and procedures
Skills in:
- Strong leadership skills in coordinating guidance and safety efforts among educators, law enforcement, and community stakeholders.
- Proficiency in conducting security assessments and analyzing safety protocols.
- Effective communication through presentation skills and public speaking to train and educate school personnel.
- The ability to support, develop and execute school-wide safety drills and crisis response exercises.
- Expertise in advising and consulting with schools on best practices for security planning.
- Familiarity with behavioral threat assessment and intervention strategies.
Abilities:
- Capacity to assess security risks and provide actionable recommendations.
- Ability to facilitate discussions and build consensus among school leaders, law enforcement, and community partners.

Physical Demands:
This position will require,
- The ability to conduct on-site safety assessments, including walking school grounds and evaluating infrastructure.
- Model effective practices in training to educators that require demonstration of physical exertion in emergency situations.
- Capability to respond quickly to inquiries, communications, priority contact regarding emergency situations as needed.
- Travel to schools, conferences, and training sessions.
Work Environment:
The work environment for the ACES Center for Safe Schools is dynamic and requires adaptability across different educational settings:
- On-Site School Visits: Frequent travel to schools and educational institutions for security assessments, training sessions, and consultations.
- Office & Remote Work: Administrative tasks, report writing, and strategic planning can often be completed in an office or remote setting.
- Collaboration with Multiple Stakeholders: Regular interactions with school leaders, teachers, law enforcement officers, parents, and community groups.
- Emergency Response Situations: Occasionally responding to crisis situations that require immediate attention and intervention.
- Flexible Work Hours: Depending on school needs, some work may occur outside regular school hours, including evenings and weekends for training and crisis response exercises.
Qualifications
Candidates must have experience in at least one of the following fields:
- School Safety & Security: Experience in developing school safety programs, conducting security assessments, and implementing safety procedures.
- Emergency Management: Experience in risk assessment, crisis response, disaster preparedness, and school emergency drills.
- Law Enforcement: Former or current police officers, school resource officers (SROs), or public safety officials with school-based experience.
- Education Administration: School administrators, district safety officers, or educators with school safety leadership roles.
- Federal/State Agency Experience: Previous employment with FEMA, DHS, DOJ, or other agencies specializing in security, crisis response, or risk mitigation.
Bachelor’s Degree (Required) in relevant disciplines related to school safety and security
Master’s Degree (Preferred) in Educational Leadership, Emergency Management, Law Enforcement/Public Safety Administration, Risk Management
Certifications (One or more of the following preferred):
Certified School Safety Specialist (CSSS) – Offered by various state departments of education
ALICE Instructor Certification – Active Shooter Response Training
National Association of School Resource Officers (NASRO) Certification – School Safety Officer Training
FEMA Emergency Management Certifications (IS-100, IS-200, IS-700, IS-800) – Incident Command System Training
Certified Threat Manager (CTM) – Association of Threat Assessment Professionals
CPTED Certification (Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design) – School and facility security planning
Mental Health First Aid Certification – Crisis intervention training for students and staff
CPR and First Aid Certification – Required for emergency preparedness roles
