The Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) is seeking an enthusiastic Gymnastics Instructor to coach multiple levels in our women’s competitive team program, the Arlington Aerials! This role is an exciting and fulfilling role within our popular and growing Gymnastics Program. The Gymnastics Instructor serves Arlington County’s community and surrounding areas by offering quality, competitive gymnastics coaching. Join our well-known and amazing team!
The Arlington County Gymnastics program supports a robust recreational class program and two successful, competitive teams - the Arlington Aerials and the Arlington Tigers. Our programs offer over 250 classes yearly and teams compete in various state, regional, and national competitions.
Specific duties include:
- Coaching the Arlington Aerials girls’ competitive team spanning pre-team (“Dynamites”), Compulsory, and/or lower Optional levels as assigned;
- Building stations/rotations, coordinating with other coaches, providing customer service, and/or maintaining the assigned gymnastics levels’ schedule(s);
- Providing tailored gymnastics instruction to each gymnast's individual needs while evaluating their performance on a regular basis through collaboration with the Gymnastics Program coaching staff;
- Preparing for instruction, creating/reviewing lesson plans, and reviewing curriculum;
- Inspecting equipment and reporting unsafe conditions to your supervisor in a timely manner;
- Setting up equipment prior to practices and securing equipment after;
- Recommending purchase of supplies and equipment to benefit the overall program; and
- Completing required paperwork, such as attendance reports, incident reports, evaluations, etc.; and
- Performing other job-related duties as assigned.
The ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience teaching the development of proper gymnastics techniques, with the ability to motivate and effectively communicate with students, parents, and coworkers. Additionally, they will exercise effective decision-making skills, along with basic computer, and digital information management skills.
Minimum:
- High School Diploma/Equivalent;
- 800 hours of technical experience in Gymnastics (may come from a variety of sources, such as work, volunteer, or formal athletic participation); and
- 50 hours as an instructor/coach.
Substitution : Additional education in a related field may be substituted for the experience requirement, with each year of post-high school education substituting for 400 hours of technical experience. However, additional education may not be substituted for the instructing hours requirement.
Desirable: Preference may be given to candidates with a Bachelor’s degree in related field, and/or experience with one or more of the following:
- Recreational Gymnastics Instructor including compulsory and/or optional level coaching for gymnastics teams;
- Working in a USA Gymnastics Member club setting; and/or Using lifting equipment and spotting children.

Special Requirements
Certifications: Must obtain and/or maintain all required certifications within 60 days of hire.
- USA Gymnastics Membership
- CPR/AED/FirstAide; and
- Safe Sport
Driver's License: The applicant must possess, or obtain by time of appointment, a valid driver's license. The applicant must authorize Arlington County to obtain or provide a copy of their official driving record. Any offer of employment may be contingent upon a favorable review of the applicant's driving record.
Background Check: A pre-employment background check will be conducted. It may include criminal record, driving record, education, and professional licensure. You may be required to sign a release authorizing the County to obtain your background information.
Additional Information
Work Hours: 40 hours a week. Schedule will vary based on the facility’s schedule of events. Must be able to work varying shifts which may include days, nights, weekends, and holidays.
