Job Title: Safety Coordinator

Department: Safety/Operations

Reports To: Safety Manager or Plant Manager

Job Summary

The Safety Coordinator is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining safety programs to ensure compliance with OSHA standards, company policies, and industry best practices. This role works to create a safe working environment by minimizing risks, managing safety training programs, and promoting a safety-first culture.

EMJ is a leading distributor of metal bar and tubular products in North America. We purchase over 25,000 different metal products in large quantities from primary producers, including a broad mix of carbon, alloy and stainless steel and aluminum bar, tubular and plate products. With one of the largest inventories of these products available in North America, we are able to fully support the growing demands of our vast customer base, and to deliver these materials on time, every time.

Key Responsibilities

Safety Program Development and Implementation:

  • Develop and implement safety policies, procedures, and protocols specific to steel manufacturing operations.
  • Conduct regular safety audits and risk assessments to identify hazards and recommend corrective actions.
  • Maintain compliance with OSHA regulations and other relevant safety standards.

Training and Education:

  • Organize and conduct safety training programs, including fire safety, equipment handling, chemical safety, and emergency response procedures.
  • Ensure all employees are trained in proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).

Incident Management:

  • Investigate workplace accidents, near-misses, and injuries to determine root causes and recommend preventive measures.
  • Maintain accurate records of incidents and submit reports to management and regulatory agencies as required.

Inspection and Compliance:

  • Perform regular inspections of the facility, equipment, and work practices to ensure compliance with safety standards.
  • Coordinate with external inspectors and auditors during safety and environmental assessments.

Emergency Preparedness:

  • Develop and maintain emergency response plans, including fire evacuation and chemical spill response.
  • Oversee maintenance of fire alarms, sprinklers, hoses, and other safety equipment.

Communication and Culture Building:

  • Act as a safety advocate by fostering a safety-conscious culture among all employees.
  • Organize and lead safety committee meetings, ensuring employee participation and engagement.

Qualifications

  • Education: Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, or related field preferred.
  • Experience: 3 years in a safety-focused role, preferably in a manufacturing or industrial setting.
  • Certifications: OSHA 30-Hour General Industry Certification, CPR/First Aid, or similar credentials preferred.

Skills

  • Strong knowledge of OSHA and safety compliance requirements.
  • Excellent communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and safety management software.

Working Conditions

  • Regular exposure to loud noise, heat, and industrial equipment in a steel manufacturing environment.
  • May involve climbing, standing, and walking for extended periods.
  • Occasional on-call availability in case of emergencies.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: From $70,000.00 per year
