They assist communications leadership with achieving departmental and institutional goals, and coordinate with colleagues on the research and communications teams.Key responsibilities include : Planning and managing the dissemination and promotion of new research releases to traditional and non-traditional media in the U.S. and internationally, crafting outreach materials (e.g. press releases, advisories, and pitch emails), and monitoring media and public discourse about the Center's research.Developing and implementing outreach efforts to connect the Center's work with key stakeholder audiences by developing relationships with other organizations and organizing virtual and in-person briefings.The communications manager follows U.S. news and global discourse, gets the details right, thinks strategically and rolls up their sleeves to get the job done. They are responsible for activities that promote, enhance and protect the organization's "gold-standard" brand reputation.Primary responsibilitiesCommunications strategy and leadership

Under the guidance of the communications director and associate director, develop and implement communications plans for major research studies to build reach, influence and impact for the Center's work. Identify target audiences, goals and dissemination strategies and tactics for key priorities while working within the overall institutional brand strategy.Build strong relationships with the managing director and staff of the research team, digital producers and designers, and other researchers and staff across the Center.Media relations and stakeholder engagement

Ensure that the Center's work reaches, informs and engages key target audiences who are stakeholders in the Center's research by implementing a range of tactics, including media outreach, speaking engagements, and email alerts.Cultivate and manage new and ongoing relationships with major media partners, and work with senior communications staff to develop and ensure effective execution of media outreach plans.Manage timing and strategy for major media releases, balancing overall institutional needs.Prepare spokespeople for interviews and serve as a resource to senior researchers in preparation for media events and speaking engagements.Triage press requests.Work with communications colleagues to develop and manage media lists for releases.Oversee production of Pew Research Center events, roundtables and press conferences, including their management, program and panel development, speaker handling, and event logistics.Liaise with external partners, including major media organizations, other research institutions, conveners and funding partners, to ensure effective and smooth collaboration for dissemination and research partnerships.Investigate new dissemination strategies and delivery channels for existing material; attend conferences; reach out to media, think tanks and other content creators; and stay informed about new technologies and trends.Brand and reputation management

Protect Pew Research Center's gold-standard brand by providing superior judgment to avoid reputational damage and helping craft thoughtful responses to critical coverage.Lead with a research and data-driven storytelling mindset that drives toward impact.Identify brand-building opportunities and champion the Center's adherence to its brand guidelines.Monitor media and public discourse about the Center's work, track media coverage, and follow up on inaccurate data citations.Work with communications and design staff to ensure that collateral and other material are consistent with the Center's style and standards.Institutional communications

Communicate research activities and report on dissemination outcomes to the communications team, Pew Research Center's leadership and board, and the Center's parent organization, The Pew Charitable Trusts.Collect a robust set of qualitative and quantitative performance indicators related to the dissemination of research.Help prepare clear, coherent and accurate reports to Pew Research Center's leadership and board and The Pew Charitable Trusts.Prepare dissemination reports to external partners and donors, as needed.Knowledge and skills requirementsExcellent project management skills.Advanced media relations experience.Knowledge of communications strategic planning and experience with a wide range of outreach tactics.Exceptional verbal communication, presentation and writing skills.Ability to work in a team, and across multiple teams, under deadline and with diplomacy and poise.A demonstrated interest in public opinion polling and Pew Research Center's research topics.Creative, proactive and strategic thinker with a growth mindset.Highly organized, adaptable, detail-oriented, dependable and solutions-focused contributor.Proficiency with Microsoft Office (especially Teams, Outlook, Word, PowerPoint and Excel).Knowledge of media outreach and tracking tools such as Meltwater and Salesforce.Working knowledge of video, interactive media, production and / or content production.Education / training / experience requirementsBachelor's degree or military experience in public relations, communications, mass media, journalism, politics or related field.Minimum 7-10 years of relevant experience. Experience in a nonprofit, think tank, research or academic environment strongly preferred.Knowledge of Washington, national and international press corps, and proven record of cultivating media relationships.Important notesApplications without a cover letter will not be considered.Applications will be accepted at least through January 5, 2025.The communications manager is a member of the 15-person Strategic Communications team and reports to the Associate Director.FLSA Status : ExemptLocationPew Research Center is an office-based workplace, with all staff working in the Center's Washington, D.C., office two core days weekly (Tuesday and Wednesday).
