Arkansas State University Mid-South seeks a qualified individual to lead the development of a licensed practical nursing program and to provide training to practical nursing students at a progressive, student-centered community college close to the metropolitan Memphis, TN, area. This is a provisional full-time, 12-month position with full college benefits. The position is supported with grant funding provided by the Department of Labor and the Strengthening Career and Technical Education for the 21st Century Act (Perkins V). A successfully developed practical nursing program will continue to be supported by the College following the termination of grant funding.

Qualifications : Candidate must possess a current unencumbered Registered Nurse license to practice in Arkansas, a Baccalaureate Degree or higher in Nursing, and previous experience in clinical nursing practice and / or education, preferably at a community college. The successful candidate should also demonstrate knowledge of the Arkansas State Board of Nursing (ASBN) Rules and Standards for Nursing Education Programs, as well as other relevant state and federal regulatory requirements. Other qualifications include evidence of ongoing commitment to professional development and to student learning and goal achievement. Working knowledge of Microsoft applications is required, and previous use of Canvas or another LMS is a plus. Preference will be given to candidates who understand active learning and divergent learning styles, and who can develop computer-based and simulation learning modules to support classroom instruction.

Responsibilities : Reports to the Dean of Allied Health and Sciences with responsibility for planning, administration, implementation, and evaluation of the Practical Nursing (PN) program and advising and instruction of PN program students, as well as ensuring and maintaining program compliance with the ASBN Rules and Standards for Nursing Education Programs. In the first year, the Practical Nursing Program Director will lead the development of the program, seeking the necessary approvals from the Arkansas Division of Higher Education (ADHE)and the ASBN to offer instruction, with the goal of enrolling the first cohort of students beginning in Fall 2025. Some teaching is required, and teaching schedule may include evening or weekend hours. Other responsibilities include :

Planning and Administration

  • Develop curriculum that supports a career pathway model and aligns with ASBN Rules and Standards, professional licensure requirements, and local employer partner needs.
  • Develop written policies and procedures for the program, consistent with institutional policies, to include expectations and requirements for program faculty, assistant clinical instructors, preceptors, and students.
  • Inform the development of all published program materials.
  • in the recruitment, supervision, and mentoring of practical nursing faculty.
  • with the Dean of Allied Health and Sciences to schedule and staff PN program courses for the for the Fall, Spring, and Summer semesters.
  • leadership, direction, mentorship, and support to all PN faculty, assistant clinical instructors, and preceptors, ensuring regular communication, appropriate orientation / training, and quality supervision.
  • all faculty maintain and provide documentation of education and clinical competencies in areas of instructional responsibilities.

Implementation and Evaluation

  • Understand ASBN guidelines and standards and maintain program compliance, ensuring continuous quality review and improvement of the educational program.
  • written policies for admission, readmission, transfer, and advanced placement of students, as well as for the progression and graduation of students, in accordance with institutional policies.
  • ongoing systematic assessment and evaluation of student learning, preceptorship experience, and clinical instruction effectiveness, and implement strategies that help students attain course- and program-level learning outcomes, informing long-range planning and ongoing development of the program.
  • Procure, develop, and / or maintain all necessary laboratory equipment, simulations, ensuring their use meets regulatory agency standards and industry needs and that supply inventory meets programmatic instructional needs.
  • and maintain positive relationships with employer partners and healthcare providers in support of their workforce training needs, involving them in the evaluation of the program, curriculum, and graduates; facilitate regularly scheduled advisory council meetings; and develop clinical site partnerships that provide students with work-based learning opportunities.

  • all student records necessary for evaluating the effectiveness of the program and documenting student attainment of competencies.
  • Compile, prepare and deliver / submit all necessary reports for state and grant reporting purposes, including those required by the Arkansas State Board of Nursing.
  • Advising and Instruction

  • Teach licensed practical nursing courses during the fall, spring, and summer terms, in accordance with approved ASU Mid-South syllabi and academic standards, providing instruction in the competencies and skills required for state licensure.

  • NCLEX-PN examinations for qualifying students.
  • with secondary center medical professions programming to promote matriculation of students into the practical nursing program.

  • in institutional and programmatic recruitment and retention initiatives.
  • in activities related to commencement and registration.
  • on college committees, including program advisory councils, fostering positive and cooperative involvement with all council members.
