The Austin Rowing Club is seeking reliable, enthusiastic, and customer-focused individuals to join our team as Rental Assistants. This position plays a key role in the day-to-day operations of our kayak and stand-up paddleboard (SUP) rental business located on Lady Bird Lake. Rental Assistants will assist customers in launching and returning kayaks and paddleboards, manage rentals via point of sale (POS) systems, ensure the safety of all watercraft, and maintain a positive and safe environment for both guests and staff.
Key Responsibilities:
- Customer Service: Greet and assist customers with renting kayaks, SUPs, and other equipment. Provide clear instructions on safety guidelines, equipment use, and waterway regulations.
- Safety: Ensure all customers are fitted with life jackets and provide safety briefings before they head out on the water. Monitor guests to ensure adherence to safety practices while on the water.
- Launching and Landing: Help customers launch and land kayaks, SUPs, and other watercraft safely. Assist with boarding and disembarking, ensuring the equipment is properly handled.
- Equipment Maintenance: Inspect kayaks, SUPs, paddles, and life jackets for damage or wear. Ensure all equipment is clean, functional, and ready for use.
- Dock Maintenance: Maintain a clean and organized dock area. Ensure the dock is clear of debris, and equipment is stored properly.
- Customer Engagement: Answer questions and offer advice about local waterways, including directions, points of interest, and safety information.
- Point of Sale (POS): Operate the point-of-sale system for rentals, ensuring smooth and accurate transactions. Process payments (credit, and digital) and provide receipts. Handle any customer inquiries or issues related to billing or payments.
- Operations Support: Assist with inventory management, check-ins/outs, and the daily opening/closing of operations. Occasionally assist with event setup or group bookings.
- Team Collaboration: Work closely with other Dock Hands and staff to ensure efficient and smooth operation of all activities. Assist in training new team members when necessary.
Qualifications:
- Required:
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Strong communication and customer service skills.
- Ability to lift and carry equipment (e.g., kayaks, SUPs) weighing up to 40-50 lbs.
- Basic knowledge of water safety and watercraft handling.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays.
- A team-oriented attitude with a strong work ethic.
- Preferred:
- Previous experience with water sports, kayaking, SUP, or working at a water sports facility.
- Experience with point-of-sale (POS) systems and handling cash or digital transactions.
- First Aid/CPR certification (or willing to obtain upon hire).
- Knowledge of local waterways, particularly Lady Bird Lake and surrounding areas.
