General Summary of Job Duties

The B&O Railroad Museum seeks an organized, creative, and energetic candidate for the position of Museum Educator, with a passion for Middle School education. Working closely with the Director of Education, the candidate will research, develop, implement, and participate in the museum’s educational initiatives and programming centered on the themes of History, STEAM, and Innovation. The Educator will coordinate and facilitate much of our school field trip program, which serves over 8,000 students annually, as well as maintain and expand programming and initiatives for families and visitors. This candidate should be someone who enjoys working with middle school aged children, shaping new programs, telling stories and inspiring youth to learn, contributing to the museum’s educational content, and supporting teachers with their classroom objectives. Qualifications, Skills, and Experience

A Bachelor of Arts or Science degree in education, special education, history, social studies, museum studies, or another related field is required. A minimum of 2 years’ experience working full-time in formal or informal education, including the designing and delivery of quality education programs for students with diverse backgrounds, ages, and interests. Classroom or museum teaching experience is preferred. An interest in history or science a plus and no prior railroading knowledge required. We are looking for someone eager and excited to learn new things!

Required knowledge and abilities:

• Ability to deliver quality education programs to students and adults of varied backgrounds and ages.
• Experience working with children in formalized learning environments, especially Middle School
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills
• Excellent organizational skills
• A desire to help design museum content with strong educational goals.
• Ability to work well with groups as well as work effectively on independent projects.
• Ability to work with museum guests, volunteers, and interns of all backgrounds and ages.
• Computer skills including Microsoft Office, Zoom, email, and web-based research.
• Ability to pass background check.

Duties:

• Facilitates hands-on workshops, and tours to visiting student and adult groups with the help of volunteers and the Director of Education. Acts as contact for greeting and introducing groups to the museum.
• Coordinates the scheduling of school field trip bookings to the museum between the school and the museum’s staff.
• Facilitates youth literacy and educational programs for a wide range of grade levels, such as toddler story time, Sensory Friendly Summer Camp, or high school STEAM mentorship programs.
• Collaborates with the curatorial team to research and develop educational content and programming for the museum.
• Contributes to the development of in-person, virtual, and self-guided tours, and experiences for visitors of all ages.
• Assist the Education Director in fostering relationships with stakeholder interest groups and partner agencies, as well as with outreach to state and local educators.
• Be available for occasional weekend programming as they are scheduled (1-2 weekend programs per month). The museum is a hybrid workplace and is open 7 days a week with employees expected to work on-site (including weekends when necessary) with the opportunity to work remote at their supervisor’s discretion.
• Other duties as assigned. The Museum’s team is a small team that is preparing for the 200^th anniversary of American railroading in 2027. This position may be required to work special events and engage in other Museum activities as needed.
