What are the responsibilities and job description for the Transportation and Shipping Manager position at Baker Boy?
JOB SUMMARY
The Transportation and Shipping Manager will be responsible for overseeing and managing all aspects of our transportation, shipping, and warehouse operations. They will ensure timely, efficient, and cost-effective delivery of our premium products. They will play a crucial role in maintaining our high standards of customer service and supporting the growth of our business.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
1. Drives continuous improvement in achieving preset KPI’s within the transportation and shipping areas to deliver safe, quality and legal product.
2. Ensures that processes are in place and followed for picking accuracy.
3. Coordinate loads, equipment and backhauls to achieve maximum utilization of the fleet following all DOT rules.
4. Maximizes labor efficiencies while adhering to proper company policies, procedures, and safety standards
5. Provides day-to-day management, coaching, evaluation and support to the transportation, shipping, and warehouse team members.
6. Develop and manage the transportation and shipping budget, monitor expenses, and identify cost-saving opportunities.
7. Management of freight expense for goods sold and those purchased within reach of our transportation routes.
8. Ensures compliance with policies and procedures such as HACCP, Safety, Sanitation Standard Operating Procedures (SSOPs), Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs), and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and works to eliminate reoccurring violations.
9. Coaches team leaders to understand and share company goals and KPIs as well as how to achieve them
10. Attends to injured team members immediately, obtains medical assistance if necessary, and completes proper Workforce Safety paperwork
11. Motivates others to accept and support change.
12. Increases personal knowledge and information through educational opportunities.
13. Participates in the evaluation process of team leaders and team members.
14. Utilizes coaching tools such as Coach to Success and Performance Improvement Plans to mentor and grow team members’ knowledge within the company.
15. Performs the team leader’s task in the team leader’s absence.
ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, CHARACTERISTICS
1. High School Diploma required; College degree in Business Administration, Logistics, Supply Chain Management or related field of study preferred.
2. Five or more years of relevant leadership work experience required; Five or more years of relevant transportation experience with CDL preferred.
3. Extensive knowledge of company policies and procedures.
4. Proficiency in Microsoft Office products, including Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other computer programs such as Redzone.
5. Strong technical knowledge of equipment within the organization.
6. Demonstrated leadership capabilities with the ability to mentor others and develop effective succession plans.
7. Demonstrated organizational skills, problem-solving tactics, and ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously to provide appropriate information to perform tasks efficiently and effectively.
8. Demonstrated strong soft skills such as tact, self-awareness, motivation, empathy, interpersonal competency, and willingness to accept other points of view and compromise as needed
9. Ability to act with integrity, professionalism, and confidentiality in handling sensitive management and product information.
10. Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with other leaders, department managers, and team members as appropriate.
11. Demonstrated strong written and verbal communication skills at various organizational levels.
12. Capable of being proactive and self-motivated with successful project accomplishments.
13. Ability to work various shifts and hours to guide team members and ensure successful Baker Boy initiatives.
14. Demonstrated ability in increasing efficiencies and reducing waste
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
1. Ability to lift 20 pounds continuously and occasionally lift up to 52 pounds.
2. Ability to work in various environments, including intense noise, cold, and moisture.
3. Bending, stooping, walking, reaching, grasping, carrying, repetitive motions, and visual skills are required on a constant basis.
KEY RESULTS AREAS
1. Build Infrastructure of Team Members
a. Mentor and provide continuous training for department leadership to develop skill sets
b. Assist Human Resources in the hiring of team members
c. Completes 1-2-1s with team leaders quarterly
d. Responsible for teams’ development, success, and retention.
e. Ensures successful utilization of the Coach to Success program by following up on time

3. Daily Performance
a. Oversee the daily operations of the transportation department, including route planning, vehicle maintenance, and driver management.
b. Oversee the daily operations of the freezer department, including order picking, loading trucks and handling and storing of products.
c. Oversee the daily operations of the warehouse department, including receiving raw material and packaging supplies.
d. Develop and implement strategies to improve shipping efficiency, reduce costs, and enhance deliver accuracy.
e. Ensure all transportation and shipping activities comply with federal, state, and local regulations, as well as company policies and safety standards.
f. Track and analyze transportation and shipping performance metrics, identify areas for improvement, and implement corrective actions as needed.
4. Conflict Resolution
a. Addresses employee concerns, customer complaints, and resolves issues with the assistance of the production manager, Human Resources, or other pertinent departments
b. Issues PIPs as necessary with assistance from the Vice President of Operations and Human Resources
