Position Purpose
The Security & Systems Administrator II plays a crucial role in supporting and maintaining the organization's IT infrastructure and security posture. Positioned as a mid-level role, it is designed for individuals with solid experience in both fields, but with a scope of work that is distinct from the higher-level strategic and complex problem-solving responsibilities of a Senior Security & Systems Engineer. This role focuses on the effective implementation, operation, and maintenance of IT systems and security measures, under the guidance of the IT Security & Infrastructure Manager.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform routine administration and maintenance of the IT infrastructure, including servers, network devices, and security systems, to ensure operational efficiency and security.
- Apply established security protocols and tools (firewalls, antivirus, intrusion detection systems) to protect against threats and unauthorized access.
- Monitor system performance and security logs to identify anomalies or breaches, responding promptly to mitigate risks.
- Participate in the deployment of system and security updates, patches, and enhancements to maintain up-to-date protections.
- Provide Level 2 technical support, addressing IT and security issues, escalating complex problems as necessary.
- Conduct vulnerability assessments and assist in security audits, contributing to the continuous improvement of the organization's security stance.
- Engage in IT projects, ensuring that security is integrated into technological deployments and initiatives.
- Assist in the development, documentation, and enforcement of security policies and procedures.
- Support disaster recovery and business continuity efforts, including planning, documentation, and testing.
- Serve as a resource and mentor for junior staff, promoting best practices in IT systems management and security.
Technical Requirements
- Strong understanding of network design (LAN/WAN, cloud networking, wireless infrastructure).
- Proficient in routers, switches, and firewalls.
- Knowledgeable in cybersecurity (IDS/IPS, firewalls, antivirus, EDR).
- Experience with cloud services (AWS, Azure, GCP) and cloud security.
- Data encryption techniques, SSL/TLS protocols, and VPNs.
- Vulnerability assessments, penetration testing, and threat management.
- Operating systems (Windows, Linux/Unix) and virtualization (VMware, Hyper-V).
- SIEM tools for security alert analysis.
- Scripting (PowerShell, Python, Bash) for IT automation.
Summary of Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Cybersecurity, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience. Relevant experience and professional training in a similar role may substitute for formal education.
- 3-5 years of experience in systems administration and IT security, demonstrating a progression in responsibility and technical capability.
- Professional certifications in IT security (e.g., CompTIA Security , SSCP) or systems administration (e.g., MCSA, CCNA) are preferred.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and projects effectively.
