Job Summary
The Pipe Layer position involves the process of assembling, connecting, testing and backfilling pipe systems for water mains, sewers, chemical lines and drain systems.
Responsibilities and Duties
- Measuring piping to ensure a correct fit.
- Inspecting pipe for any defects.
- Laying pipe into the excavated trenches.
- Measuring piping and cutting it down or resizing it to meet specifications.
- Conducting initial ground assessments and examinations.
- Digging pipe trenches to specified grades.
- Assemble and install shoring systems.
- Test pit and locate existing utilities.
- Backfilling and compacting pipe trenches.
- Participate in jobsite safety obligations.
- Testing and verification that piping meets required specs.
- Display, communicate and enforce Bearing safety protocols and standards.
- Other tasks as assigned
- Skills and Abilities
- Ability to shoot and verify grades.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and site maps.
- Ability to perform material assessments for required tasks.
- A familiarity with SDR pipe, C900 pipe, stainless steel process pipe, ductile iron, etc.
Experience and Education
- 3 years of underground excavation and utility system install experience
- Valid Driver’s License
- Experience with machine-operated trenching tools.
- Detailed knowledge of sewer systems, storm drains, chemical piping, water mains etc.
- Detailed knowledge of construction and pipe laying techniques.
- Excellent problem-solving skills.
Physical Requirements
- Must be able to work in an active outdoor construction site environment.
- Must be able to ascend and descend ladders, stairs, and work in confined spaces and in proximity to loud equipment.
- Must be able to traverse irregular and steep terrain.
- Must be able to work in various weather conditions and be exposed to dirt or dust.
- Must be able to wear the required personal protective equipment while at work.
- Must be able to lift and carry 25lbs regularly and 50lbs occasionally.
- Must be able to work for long periods of time while standing.
