The Summer 2025 temporary positions offer three orientation dates: April 29, May 19, and June 2. Please consider these dates when applying for a summer position.

The primary function of the Forestry Aide is to assist Forestry Staff with active implementation of forest management projects on the Berea College Forest. These projects may consist of maintaining hiking trails, invasive species management, assist with sawmilling, pruning trees, clearing brush, assist with timber stand improvement, maintaining tools/equipment, collecting and entering data and other duties as needed. This position involves approximately 85% fieldwork and 15% shop/barn work.

  • Implement management plans for the College Forest, including timber stand improvement, weed eating, clearing brush and repair of fences.
  • Trail and road maintenance and construction.
  • Assist in managing exotic plant species and TSI.
  • Assist in portable or stationary sawmill operation (moving & stacking lumber after milling)
  • Assist in the Utilization of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to develop digital mapping, trail maps, timber stand analyses, and other needed reports for the College’s geographic areas.
Other roles/duties will be assigned as necessary to assist the College in the attainment of the goals set forth and the enhancement of a positive, respectful learning environment for all staff, faculty and students.

  • Enrolled in High School (minimum)
Experience required to ensure success in this position:
  • Hands-on lawn care, farm and/or forestry work experience is required.
Special skills, knowledge and abilities:
  • Skills acquired through construction work, farm work, and mechanical repair work, and ability to use select power equipment is desirable.
License, certification, or registration necessary:
  • Valid driver’s license.
Physical requirements:
  • Must be able to lift and carry heavy loads up to 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to walk long distances.
Environmental conditions:
  • Must be able to work outdoors year-round in varying weather conditions.
Ability to operate the following vehicles or equipment:
  • May be called upon to operate UTV/off road vehicle.
