The Underwriting Technology Supervisor will serve as a user acceptance testing expert on system changes prior to implementation in our two proprietary systems, help shape the requirements for system changes on behalf of the underwriting department, and research strategies for technology advancements. This role will provide feedback to management and the Information Technology department on concerns and recommendations on system features and during the testing process to ensure successful live implementation of changes. They will supervise a small staff and oversee day-to-day operation of an underwriting unit, managing service level objectives and ensuring that underwriters operate within their authority limits.
Job Responsibilities
Duties to include, but are not limited to:
- User Acceptance Testing on new features or bug fixes for all commercial products offered.
- Writing specifications for the IT team to implement changes or fix bugs
- Support underwriting unit by managing referrals, providing technical guidance and expertise, and assisting in the development and training of Underwriting staff.
- Assist underwriters with managing their duties to accelerate growth and to maintain underwriting discipline.
- Assist with labeling data for machine learning purposes for Artificial Intelligence algorithms, which requires knowledge of Property & Casualty Insurance Underwriting and Auditing processes.
- Evaluates workflow to ensure that all referral and post-bind review workflow items meet service level expectation.
- Provides working level supervision to underwriters performing routine underwriting tasks, with authority for personnel and performance management actions.
- Effectively collaborate with other members of the biBERK Leadership team to work together to meet production and profitability goals.
- Participate in the successful implementation of underwriting projects and initiatives.
- Recommend improvements to underwriting policies, processes, guidelines, and practices.
- Supervisory responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training; planning, assigning, and directing work; evaluating performance, rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
- Ensure underwriting quality and profitability through thorough analysis of risk exposure consistent with company appetite.
- Contribute to and foster a results-oriented culture that drives business growth and a delightful customer experience.
- Flexibility to adapt in a constantly changing start-up environment, including changes to technology, underwriting guidelines and appetite, compliance and regulation considerations, business strategies and corporate standards.
- Partially remote role – in person 2 days a week and remote 3 days a week.
Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Willingness to roll up sleeves and multi-task towards an elevated customer experience.
- Proven analytical skills with the ability to operate with ambiguity and escalate items as necessary.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills with special attention to detail.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with co-workers within the underwriting department and other internal departments.
- Self-starter, capable of learning new skills and technologies in a rapidly changing environment.
- Capability to work independently and within a team/group environment.
- Excellent computer skills – Microsoft Office Suite with Intermediate or higher level of Microsoft Excel experience, Word and Outlook.
- Visual Basic Knowledge is a plus
Education and Experience Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree is required
- Minimum 5 years of underwriting Property & Casualty Insurance experience
- Minimum of 2 years supervision experience

In accordance with pay transparency laws and regulations, the following good faith compensation range estimate is being provided. The salary range for this position is $80,000 to $95,000 per year. Final compensation will be based on candidate qualifications, geographic location, and other considerations permitted by law.
