Compensation:
$49,117 - $55,252 per year

Job Responsibilities:
1. Plans, develops and implements nutritional education and care plans for program participants in conjunction with the Women, Infants and Children’s (WIC) program and the general health education programs of the Department.
2. Works with high-risk clients to develop individualized care plans and acts as a liaison with medical providers to approve requests for specialized infant nutritional needs.
3. Develops other nutrition protocols and nutrition education lessons to be used with high-risk clients.
4. Plans and conducts classes on nutrition and diets to groups with special nutritional needs such as heart and diabetic patients, and other participants in Health Department Programs.
5. Serves as an advisor on nutrition to special health projects such as Family Planning and Maternal and Child Health Programs.
6. Provides consultation and in-service training on nutrition to departmental employees and employees of related health organizations.
7. May conduct surveys, home visits, etc. to determine nutritional needs.
8. May conduct assessments for medical/nutritional eligibility for Department programs.
9. Assists in establishing Breastfeeding program goals and objectives.
10. Assists in establishing peer counselling program protocols and policies.
11. Participates in hiring process by recruiting and interviewing potential peer counselors in alignment with program policy and standards.
12. Arranges for training and provided mentorship for new peer counselors.
13. Monitors breastfeeding program, including data collection and metrics as well as spot checks.
14. Routinely reports to the WIC Supervisor and/or State Peer Counseling Program Coordinator.
15. Acts on all referrals from other WIC staff regarding complex breastfeeding situations beyond their scope of practice and provides high-risk counseling to mothers and infants and develops strategies to assist them to initiate and maintain breastfeeding.
16. Develops individualized feeding plan with the breastfeeding client and documents encounters and breastfeeding education in MI-WIC.
17. Assists in ordering educational materials and breast pumps.
18. Conducts individual and group breastfeeding education sessions.
19. Provides technical lactation, mentoring, orientation, and guidance for other WIC staff.
20. Maintains client confidentiality.
21. Complete other duties as assigned.
22. Coordinates with local community stakeholders such as hospitals and health care providers to enhance the effectiveness of the Peer Counseling program.
Qualifications:
Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Nutrition, Dietetics, Registered Nurse or its equivalent in terms of education, experience and training.
Experience: Minimum of one year experience counseling breastfeeding mothers and babies. Has demonstrated experience in program management and breastfeeding management and promotion.
Note: Employees who are Registered Dieticians receive a one grade pay increase.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
1. Possession of a valid vehicle operator’s license and vehicle is required.
2. In times of a public health emergency, may be required to report for specialized assigned duties inside or outside of Berrien County.
3. International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) and must maintain current IBCLC certification, or obtain IBCLC Certification within 1 year of hire.
4. IBCLC must have designated hours, separate from other clinic duties to provide these services. IBCLC must contact clients within 24 business hours of the assessed need for clinical lactation service. Visual assessment by the IBCLC will be made within 48 business hours.
Note: the following must be completed in the first year:
a. Completes Loving Support Training
b. Attends WIC Breastfeeding Basics 2-day training within first year of hire.
c. Attends annual WIC conference.
d. On-site visits by State WIC Lactation Consultants.
e. Stays up to date with Breastfeeding Best Practices, journal articles, educational materials.
f. Attends other breastfeeding related conferences/trainings as appropriate.
g. Participates in bi-monthly Breastfeeding Coalition Meetings.
