JOB DESCRIPTION:
Birmingham City Schools (BCS) is seeking a leader who will lead and support technology in teaching and learning. The Director of Information Technology is responsible for overseeing and managing the school district's technology infrastructure, including networking, end-user devices, educational technology, and helpdesk support. This position ensures the efficient and secure operation of technology systems to support educational and administrative functions. The Director will lead a team of IT professionals, collaborate with other departments, and implement strategies to enhance the use of technology in instruction and operations. The Director holds a critical role within the school district, tasked with ensuring the optimal performance, security, and availability of all technology systems that support both educational and administrative functions. This position serves as the primary leader for all technology-related initiatives and operations, working closely with various district departments to align technology infrastructure with educational goals. The Director is responsible for system maintenance and continuous improvement of the district’s technology framework, encompassing networking, end-user devices, educational tools, and helpdesk services.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Leadership and Vision:
- Develop and execute the district's technology plan aligned with educational goals and operational efficiency.
- Stay informed of emerging technology trends, tools, and best practices in K-12 education.
- Ensure technology integration enhances instructional practices and improves student outcomes.
Networking and Infrastructure Management:
- Oversee the design, implementation, and maintenance of the district's IT infrastructure, including LAN, WAN, Wi-Fi, servers, and cloud-based systems.
- Ensure network security, data integrity, and disaster recovery plans are in place and regularly updated.
- Manage contracts and relationships with third-party vendors and service providers.
End User Device Management:
- Supervise the acquisition, deployment, and maintenance of end-user devices such as desktops, laptops, tablets, and mobile devices.
- Implement and manage mobile device management (MDM) systems.
- Ensure devices meet the needs of students, faculty, and staff, and are equipped with up-to-date software and security measures.
Educational Technology:
- Collaborate with curriculum and instruction teams to integrate technology into classrooms and ensure compatibility with teaching objectives.
- Provide support and training to educators on instructional technology tools and platforms, such as learning management systems (LMS) and educational apps.
- Evaluate and recommend new educational technologies and digital resources.
Helpdesk and User Support:
- Oversee the district's helpdesk operations to ensure timely and efficient resolution of technical issues for staff, students, and faculty.
- Establish service level agreements (SLAs) for response times and resolution of helpdesk tickets.
- Develop and implement procedures to improve customer service and user satisfaction.
Budgeting and Resource Management:
- Develop and manage the technology department's budget, ensuring cost-effective use of resources.
- Identify funding opportunities, including grants, to support technology initiatives.
- Maintain an accurate inventory of all IT assets and ensure proper asset lifecycle management.
Staff Supervision and Development:
- Lead and supervise all technology personnel, including network engineers, technicians, helpdesk staff, and educational and instructional technology specialists.
- Provide ongoing professional development and training opportunities for technology staff.
- Set performance goals, conduct evaluations, and foster a culture of collaboration and innovation.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master's Degree with degree in Technology, Computer Science, a related field or degree in another field with educational technology experience.
- A minimum of 5 years leading technology in an educational or private sector.
- Must participate in background check and subsequently meet the “suitability for employment” requirement.
- The Superintendent may deem such alternative and additions to the above qualifications as appropriate.

If the applicant does not possess this certification at the time of hire, they must obtain the ALET Alabama Chief Technology Officer Academy certification within two years of employment.
- Obtain a minimal of 12 hours of ALET-approved professional development yearly.
