As a Controller, you will be critical in overseeing financial operations and ensuring accurate accounting practices. The Controller develops and executes strategies and standards related to accounting policy, financial reporting, general ledger maintenance, budgeting, and financial systems and controls. Oversees monthly and annual accounting close processes and coordinates the preparation of financial statements and filings in compliance with GAAP. Conducts ad hoc analyses of the organization's finances and presents findings to executive leadership for decision-making and planning. Develops internal controls and oversees audits of policies and procedures meant to preserve the organization's assets.


Primary Responsibilities

  • Financial Reporting: You will be responsible for producing periodic financial reports, including income statements, balance sheets, and cash flow statements. These reports provide insights into the company’s financial health and performance.
  • Accounting Operations: Oversee various accounting functions, such as general ledger (GL) accounting, accounts payable (A/P), accounts receivable (A/R), fixed assets, and expense management. Maintain an adequate system of accounting records to support financial reporting.
  • Budgeting and Forecasting: Collaborate with upper management and our financial analyst to help create strategic financial plans. Develop budgets, track performance against targets, and identify areas for cost reduction or efficiency improvement. Utilize tools and software to prepare dashboards and financial summaries to discuss with leadership.
  • Risk Mitigation: Implement and maintain a comprehensive set of internal controls to safeguard company assets and mitigate financial risks. Ensure compliance with financial regulations and industry standards.
  • Team Leadership: Supervise accounting and finance departments, providing guidance to team members. Foster a collaborative and efficient work environment.
  • Direct-to-Consumer (DTC) Business Models: Leverage your understanding of e-commerce and direct-to-consumer business models. Analyze financial data specific to online sales channels and adapt strategies accordingly.
  • Financial Compliance: Stay informed about changes in accounting standards and regulations. Ensure the company adheres to Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Cash Management: Monitor cash flow, optimize working capital, and manage liquidity. Make informed decisions regarding investments, debt, and capital expenditures.
  • Strategic Insights: Collaborate with cross-functional teams to provide financial insights that drive business decisions. Identify opportunities for growth and operational improvements.
  • Sustainability and Ethics: Promote ethical financial practices and contribute to the company’s commitment to sustainability and responsible business practices.


Desired Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (Master’s degree or CPA preferred)
  • Minimum 8 years of progressive experience, including exposure to e-commerce, retail industries and allocation of manufacturing costs from affiliates.
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail
  • Proficiency in financial software and tools
  • Excellent communication and leadership abilities
  • Ability to influence others in a positive matter.
  • Strategic thinking skills.

In-person collaboration is a key aspect of Blue Marble's work culture. This role has been designated as a hybrid, with three days a week expected at corporate headquarters in Ashland, Oregon. This arrangement allows for a balance between in-person collaboration and remote work flexibility.
