Job Description:

BMWL is hiring for a client manager role, with the flexibility to bring on candidates at varying levels of experience. Depending on experience and skill set, candidates may be hired as an Associate, Senior Associate or Director-level client manager. This role offers an opportunity to work in the fast-paced world of political consulting and public affairs, managing high-profile projects that shape public opinion and drive meaningful change.


The client manager will play a critical role in managing projects, clients and deliverables. This includes coordinating the work of partners, clients, steering committees, media teams and other stakeholders to advance projects and ensure deadlines are met. This is an excellent opportunity for professionals seeking to make a mark in Bay Area politics and government affairs, working on issues they are passionate about.


Candidates must be exceptionally well-organized and adept at managing people and projects. Strong communication skills, problem-solving abilities and a high level of attention to detail are essential. The ideal candidate will be self-motivated and able to balance multiple priorities in a fast-moving environment.


Duties & Responsibilities (Based on Experience Level)


Associate-level:

  • Provide professional client service with supervision, ensuring client needs are met.
  • Manage workload and prioritize assignments to meet deadlines.
  • Conduct research on political issues, candidates and relevant stakeholders.
  • Analyze data and information to support campaign and public affairs strategies.
  • Monitor media coverage and track public sentiment on relevant political topics.
  • Assist in content development, including press releases, social media and website updates.
  • Support the planning and execution of events, including rallies, town halls, and fundraisers.
  • Provide administrative support, including scheduling, document preparation and meeting coordination.
  • Work collaboratively with internal teams to ensure client deliverables are met.

Senior Associate-level:

  • Independently service clients, providing high-quality deliverables with minimal supervision.
  • Take the lead on campaign and public affairs assignments, driving them to completion.
  • Coordinate across teams to ensure deadlines and client expectations are met.
  • Contribute meaningfully to strategy development by understanding campaign and public affairs objectives.
  • Generate well-written reports, proposals, and other deliverables with limited input.
  • Participate in business development activities, supporting the creation of proposals and outreach to potential clients.

Director-Level:

  • Manage multiple campaign and public affairs projects with minimal supervision, ensuring successful execution and client satisfaction.
  • Communicate effectively with external stakeholders, including elected officials, business leaders, and community advocates.
  • Develop and oversee high-level campaign strategies and public affairs initiatives.
  • Generate new business leads, assisting in client acquisition and proposal development.
  • Supervise and train junior staff, ensuring project goals are achieved.
  • Provide high-level strategic recommendations and thought leadership to clients.
  • Drive revenue growth by developing client relationships and expanding business opportunities.
Qualifications & Experience

Minimum qualifications for entry-level roles:

  • Bachelor’s degree in political science, communications, public relations, or a related field.
  • Strong interest in politics, public affairs, and advocacy.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational and time management abilities.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Proficiency in Google Suite.
  • Familiarity with design tools and social media platforms like Canva, Facebook/Meta, Instagram, etc., is a plus.

Preferred qualifications for mid-to-senior level roles:

  • 3-5 years of experience in campaign management, public affairs, or a relevant field, with a proven track record of leadership and client management.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and execute strategic initiatives with minimal supervision.
  • Strong experience in stakeholder engagement, media relations, and content development.
  • Experience generating business leads and managing client relationships is preferred.

Compensation & Benefits

Salary is commensurate with experience and skill level:

  • Associate-level: $70,000 - $85,000
  • Senior-level: $85,000 - $100,000
  • Director Level: $100,000 - $135,000

BMWL is a hybrid work environment that requires staff to be in our Oakland, CA office two days per week. Prospective candidates must be able to make the regular commute to the office on Mondays, Wednesdays and when special occasions require in-office work.
