Key responsibilities of a trucking safety officer:
- Compliance Management:
- Monitor driver qualification files to ensure compliance with DOT regulations regarding licenses, medical certifications, and driving records.
- Conduct random drug and alcohol testing as per DOT guidelines.
- Oversee hours of service logs to ensure drivers adhere to legal limits.
- Review vehicle inspection reports (DVIRs) to identify maintenance issues.
- Safety Training and Education:
- Develop and deliver comprehensive safety training programs for new and existing drivers on topics like defensive driving, hazard recognition, and emergency procedures.
- Conduct regular safety meetings and workshops to reinforce safety practices.
- Provide training on new safety policies and procedures.
- Accident Investigation and Reporting:
- Investigate all accidents and near-misses to identify root causes and implement corrective actions.
- Analyze accident data to identify trends and implement preventive measures.
- Prepare detailed reports on accidents for internal and regulatory purposes.
- Performance Monitoring:
- Track driver safety performance metrics such as accident rates, speeding violations, and CSA scores.
- Identify high-risk drivers and provide targeted training or coaching.
- Conduct performance reviews with drivers regarding safety compliance.
