What are the responsibilities and job description for the Jail Navigator Peer Specialist position at Bootheel Behavioral health?
Qualifications:
- Must be 21 years of age and have a high school diploma or equivalent.
- Must be a certified peer specialist in the State of Missouri.
- Self-identify as a present or former primary consumer of behavioral health services.
- Knowledge of or experience working in the criminal justice system is preferred.
- Ability to travel to and work in jail settings directly with inmates and with jail staff within Bootheel Behavioral Health service area.
Duties:
- Communicate, represent, and promote the peer perspective to inmates at the three county jails within Bootheel Behavioral Health four-county service area.
- Provide peer assistance and mentoring on a one-to-one basis.
- Support the development of problem-solving skills.
- Support persons served to take an active self-directing role in their treatment process.
- Develop and assist in a variety of support activities such as peer support groups, peer recovery groups, and family and/or psycho-educational groups, in coordination with BBH Jail Navigator and jail staff, as determinations are made to have such groups.
- Model personal responsibility, self-advocacy, and hopefulness through telling one’s personal story, and the tools and strategies that support one’s recovery.
- Assist inmates with application for Medicaid, when needed, so they can continue with services/medications upon release.
- Conduct behavioral health screening with inmates.
- Provide resource materials to inmates upon release from custody.
- Coordinate with community agencies to set up support and appointments for inmates who are to be released to the community.
- Work closely with inmates for coordination of transportation upon their release to substance use treatment, RCF, or other options as clinically needed.
- Track inmates released back into the community for 30-90 days or until they are engaged in other follow up programs, such as ERE, CBHL or CPRP services.
- Track follow up court dates and appointments and remind inmates of such.
- Compile and report data.
- Work closely with the BBH Jail Navigator and jail staff.
- Work closely with the BBH crisis team members, ERE staff and Community Behavioral Health Liaisons.
- If eligible, participate in after-hours on-call rotation approximately two shifts per month.
- Provide appropriate documentation and billing, if applicable, as needed on peer services.
- Comply with all laws, regulations and policies concerning the treatment of persons served.
- Participate in local CIT Council Meetings as coordinated with supervisor.
- Have regular staffing with supervisor regarding program activities and caseload.
- Other duties as assigned.
