Job Description Summary:
Perform duties associated with lifeguarding in order to keep guests safe. Senior Lifeguards will also provide leadership to other lifeguarding staff.Job Description:
The Parks and Recreation department is seeking Senior Lifeguards to work in Ongoing/Varied and Seasonal roles for our indoor and outdoor pools. We will be hiring multiple employees based on our programs and hours of operation. Please keep in mind that the city’s benefit package offer will differ based upon work hours and the duration of the assignment you accept.
- Ongoing/Varied: Work less than 20 hours/week with no planned end date to work. No medical, dental, or vision insurance is available, but employees receive benefits including sick time-off, wellness program, EcoPass for transit, recreation pass, and retirement plans.
- Seasonal Max: March – September. Work six (6) to 11 months, averaging more than 30 hours/week. Medical insurance is offered, but not dental or vision insurance. Other benefits received include sick time-off, wellness program, EcoPass for transit, recreation pass, and retirement plans.
- Seasonal Traditional: May – September. Work less than six (6) months, averaging more than 30 hours/week. No medical, dental, or vision insurance is available, but employees receive benefits including sick time-off, wellness program, EcoPass for transit, recreation pass, and retirement plans.
- Seasonal Limited Hours: March – September. Work less than 11 months, averaging less than 30 hours/week. No medical, dental, or vision insurance is offered, but employees receive benefits including sick time-off, wellness program, EcoPass for transit, recreation pass, and retirement plans.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Advocate the safety and wellbeing of pool guests through preventative measures including constant and vigilant surveillance.
Act as a first responder and jump in the water to perform rescues and keep people safe.
Educate, explain and enforce facility regulations, policy and procedures.
Demonstrate a proactive approach toward cleanliness and facility maintenance.
Interact positively with community members, visitors and other staff.
May conduct routine chemical tests of the water on an hourly basis.
React quickly and calmly in stressful and emergency situations.
In the case of an emergency, the senior lifeguard may lead, direct and control the situation.
Responsible for proper documentation (incident/accident/rescue reports).
Pay meticulous attention to detail and not easily distracted.
Present a professional image, dependable and on time for all shifts.
Conduct daily pump room checks
Attend mandatory pre-season and monthly in-service trainings.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Must be at least 15 years old as is the requirement to obtain required certifications.
Must be able to swim 300 yards, retrieve a 10lb brick from the bottom in 10 feet, and tread water for two minutes with no hands.
All Lifeguards are required to demonstrate life-saving skills and water competency prior to employment, Lifeguards may be tested at any time during their employment.
Demonstrated outstanding leadership qualities.
Have and maintain acceptable background information, including criminal conviction history.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Certification in Administering Emergency Oxygen
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
At least six (6) months previous experience as lifeguard.
Current American Red Cross certifications (or equivalent) in Lifeguarding
Current American Red Cross certifications (or equivalent) in First Aid
Current American Red Cross certifications (or equivalent) in CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer
SUPERVISION
Supervision Received: Water Safety Supervisor
Supervision Exercised: None
WORKING CONDITIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
Enjoy an outdoor environment with variable weather conditions, including sitting/standing in the hot sun for long periods of time (summer months).
May work early mornings, nights and weekends.
May be asked to work holidays or special events
